Bronny James Shines in NBA Preseason Debut as LeBron Cheers from the Sidelines
Bronny James made his highly anticipated NBA preseason debut on Friday, with his legendary father, LeBron James, watching from the bench. It was a proud moment for the James family as 19-year-old Bronny played his first minutes for the Los Angeles Lakers during their preseason game against the Minnesota Timberwolves. While the Lakers lost 124-107, Bronny’s time on the court provided a glimpse of his potential and future in the league.
In his 16 minutes of play, Bronny finished the game with two points. He entered the game during the second quarter and played the first half before returning for most of the fourth quarter. His initial moments were marked by some struggles, as he missed his first five shots. However, Bronny eventually found the basket with a layup in the final minute of the game, which was met with loud cheers from the crowd at Acrisure Arena.
Although his shooting wasn’t what he might have hoped for, Bronny showed his defensive capabilities. The 6-foot-2 guard recorded three blocks, along with one rebound and one assist. Lakers head coach JJ Redick was impressed by Bronny’s defensive contributions, acknowledging the unique skills he brings to the team.
“He can do some things defensively at his size that are really unique, and I think he has the potential to become a very disruptive defender,” Redick told reporters when asked about Bronny’s performance. "That manifested itself tonight. On the offensive end, he’s still finding his rhythm and figuring out his role. But that’s part of the process in a player development program, and we’re committed to helping him grow."
Redick was full of praise for Bronny’s work ethic and attitude, calling him a coachable player with a positive energy that makes him a joy to work with. “Truthfully, he’s so easy to coach. He’s got a great soul and just an amazing energy about him. I like being around him, and I’m rooting for him. He’s a good player, and we’re really happy to have him in our program,” Redick added.
LeBron, 39, sat out the game to rest, but he was present on the bench, offering support to his son throughout the contest. The Lakers’ next preseason game is against the Phoenix Suns on Sunday, which happens to be Bronny’s 20th birthday. There’s speculation that LeBron could return to the court for that game, potentially making it an even more memorable occasion for the family.
Bronny’s path to this moment has been filled with hard work and perseverance. He was selected by the Lakers as the 55th overall pick in the 2024 NBA Draft, following in his father’s footsteps by joining the same franchise. The possibility of the father-son duo sharing the court together is something that has excited fans and the basketball community alike. If they do take the floor together, they will make history as the first father-son pair to play on the same NBA team.
During a recent Lakers media event, LeBron spoke about the pride he feels for his son and the journey that has brought him to this point. “When it comes to him, I’m just at a loss for words,” LeBron said, seated beside Bronny. “I’m super proud of him for making it here. He’s grown so much, not just as a player but as a man, and he’s ready for this next step.”
LeBron also reflected on the challenges Bronny has faced in recent years and how those experiences have shaped his character. “It’s been amazing to see his growth, and knowing everything he’s gone through, he’s used all of that as motivation. Every day, he’s worked hard to get back to where he wanted to be,” LeBron said, adding, “It’s pure joy watching him develop.”
With his jersey emblazoned with “James Jr.” across the back, Bronny is now on a path that could see him create his own legacy in the NBA, separate from the enormous shadow of his father’s accomplishments. While the pressure of being LeBron’s son is undoubtedly immense, Bronny appears to be embracing the challenge with determination and focus.
As Bronny continues to find his footing in the league, fans will be eager to see how he develops and what role he carves out for himself on the Lakers roster. His debut might have been a small first step, but it’s one that signals the beginning of a journey that could one day see the James family name continue to dominate the NBA for years to come.
For now, Bronny can take pride in his first NBA preseason game, knowing that his father—and the basketball world—are watching closely as he makes his mark.
