On Friday May 23, Somers hosted Nanuet in the first round of the sections, and it didn’t take long for the teams to know who was advancing. A 4-0 first quarter lead for the home team set the tone, and the 17-6 victory left John Jay in wait. Of course, the end will inevitably come, but despite a destination of Notre Dame, Sydney Ingraham isn’t leaving the past and present behind so easily

“I wish I could bring everyone” she assured.

Her six goals, on the other hand, were doing everything to put off the future. After Jocelyn Klein scored on a free shot at 8:53, Ingraham got to tee up a freebie too and made good at 6:23.

A turnover later, Klein was the Tusker with the pick up in the Nanuet zone, and Lyla Mancini was on the receiving end. In deep, Mancini dropped the stuff, and Somers led 3-0.

Scoring at 6:04, the niftiest play of the day came despite not denting the scoreboard. Mancini did her usual waiting game, and when Ingraham came into the passing lanes, a behind the back shot was the only thing available.

Off the post at 5:24, the clang only resounded the duo’s synergy. “We’ve been playing together since a young age,” Ingraham clarified. “Fourth grade, we felt a strong connection, and it shows on the field.”

Soon enough, a pass from Caitlyn Mayfield more than made up for the near miss. Ingraham was set up on the right, drew the penalty and closed the quarter scoring with 13 seconds remaining.

Onto the second, a Nanuet goal to open was only a blip, and Ingraham quickly made the point. After drawing the penalty, she charged the net, juked with her feet and faked with her stick. The opening presenting, there was no missing on this day, and the goal paved the way for Mancini and Ingraham to connect one last time on Tusker turf.

First Mayfield picked up Ingraham’s lift from the center, the ball worked around, and eventually, Mancini settled behind to survey. Deja Vu on a multiyear rewind, Ingraham came around a pick, got hit on the beeline and gave Mancini her last ever assist on the Somers home field.

8:58 left in the half, the score was 8-1 before the clock struck seven. Mia Paulmeno assisted Klein at 8:32, and at the eight minute mark, Klein took Lily Lassen’s assist from behind the net.

Kate Barton scored next, and before the end of the half, Somers got a look at the future. Shea Mullins received Emily Snyder’s pass from up top, and her little juke from the right, drew a penalty with seconds two remaining.

The eighth grader charged straight on, and her goal had Ingraham feeling the pangs of family. “She’s like a little sister, so it’s special to see her at the varsity level,” said the Somers star.

10-3 with 24 minutes until the next round, Somers turned the tables. Julia McCartin, Sophie Padovani and Emma Monteleone tallied scores for the Tusker defense. “My first goal,” said McCartin. “So it was exciting.”

Padovani felt the same, but had a little more fun with the milestone. “We’ve tried before,” the senior joked, “it ended ugly.”

No problem being resigned back to defense, Padovani isn’t giving any ground for the quarterfinal round versus John Jay. “We played earlier in the season, falling short unfortunately. But we’ve scouted them and will be ready to play on Wednesday,” she concluded.

The game sounds intense. That first quarter lead really set the tone. You described the plays well. I've seen similar moments in sports where teamwork makes all the difference.
