Whatever it takes to save for them, there are some items you should splurge on so they last you a lifetime — and some may even appreciate in value, making them a good investment for the future.

We asked four people who live luxurious lives — including the Head Personal Shopper at Matches Fashion, the CEO of Joanne Beckham's concierge company, and the head of VIP at Heathrow Airport — for the items that everyone should invest in once in their lifetime.

An investment watch— around £5,000.

According to Helen Ridge, Leasing Director at Value Retail, the owner of the opulent Bicester Village shopping centers around the world, an investment watch is a must. Her choice? "I was given a Cartier yellow gold vintage Tank watch for my 40th birthday," she explained. The watch is now available for around £5,000 on the market.

Jay Smith, CEO of WeAreYourCity, Joanne Beckham's concierge service, agreed — but he'd go for the Patek Philippe Nautilus 5711 with a navy dial, which will set you back at least £32,000.

"This is the holy grail of stainless steel sports watches, one of the most coveted timepieces in the world," Smith said. "Waiting lists range from five to ten years or more, and some authorized dealers have even closed theirs. A sound long-term investment that can be enjoyed on a daily basis."

"I believe your suit and presentation play an important role in how you are perceived when you walk into a business meeting," Smith said. "I always say that it's better to be overdressed than underdressed. First impressions are important, and a well-tailored suit will help." Prices vary depending on the designer, but expect to pay at least £3,000 on Savile Row.
