Why do women in the Arab world wear black abayas?

Modest, simple and comfortable garment

By Kimberly JosePublished about a year ago 3 min read

For most women in the Middle East, the abaya symbolizes respect, dignity, modesty, and is a simple and comfortable garment that is in line with Islamic teachings. They wear it over their everyday dress when they go out, writes Nabila for I love Qatar.

The abaya was also common in pre-Islamic times, worn to protect the body from heat and sand. It keeps the body cool in the summer heat and protects from the winds in the winter. The abaya is complemented by a headscarf called a sheila or hijab. Some women also wear a niqab , which covers both the head and face. This is mainly a matter of personal choice or tradition.

Although there are abayas of different colors, the most common are black. What is the reason for this? There are even legends about it.

Merchant and poet

As the legend goes, during the Abbasid era, a few decades after the death of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him), a merchant brought a large collection of headscarves of different colors from Persia or Iraq to Medina. He managed to sell all of them except the black ones.

Wanting to sell his wares, the merchant went to a famous poet of the time named Darimi and asked him to write a poem for him that would make women buy up his scarves. The poet fulfilled his request, creating the following lines:

Tell me, beauty in a black veil,

What have you done to the pious worshipper?

He was rolling up his sleeves, preparing for prayer, when you stopped him at the door of the mosque.

You stole his religion and confidence from him and left him confused, without guidance…

In no time, stories spread throughout Medina about a believer who had changed his pious way of life because of a woman dressed in black, whose beauty and the mystery that surrounded her had smitten him.

When a market vendor began shouting these verses, many women rushed to his stall, eager to buy black scarves. In the blink of an eye, they were sold out!

From that day on, according to legend, women in the Arab world began to prefer black abayas and head coverings. Over the centuries, the tradition has not changed and continues to this day.

Will the abaya become just an Arab national dress?

Black goats

There is another legend on this topic. In ancient times, when life was simple and resources were limited, women had to create their outfits from whatever was available. Since black goats were often kept then , abayas were made from their wool. Over time, this became a tradition.

Legends are legends, but there are very practical reasons why women prefer black abayas.

Reason 1: Convenience

Black fabric is generally less translucent than other colors, so even in bright light, the contours of the body will not be visible through clothing of this color.

Reason 2: Local traditions

Black abayas have been worn in the Middle East for hundreds of years, and many Muslim women adhere to the traditions they grew up with and are accustomed to.

Modest fashion is abandoning the catwalk.

Reason 3: Invisibility

According to Islamic teachings, women should not wear clothes that draw attention to them. Since most women wear black clothes, a colored abaya stands out, and for those who want to remain inconspicuous, a black abaya is the best choice.

Reason 4: Relief from the heat

Although black absorbs more heat, studies have shown that it allows for better air convection under clothing in the summer heat. Therefore, a woman in a black abaya feels as comfortable as a man in a white thobe (a long men's shirt that covers the arms, neck and entire body).

Reason 5: Fashion

Another reason that cannot be ignored is that black is always in fashion. Not only does it look elegant, but it also makes the figure look slimmer. For women, this is a pretty good reason.

Black is the absence of color. It is non-existent, which translates into a double negative. They now don't want women talking to each other in the market. They have taken the Quaran and twisted it to fit the narratives of men. Men in the Middle East still rape and torture women just because they were born women. Surprise!! It is 2025 and these men still don't know how babies are made? It is the male that determines the sex of a baby!! Surprise!! I read where one woman tried to kill herself by pouring acid on her flesh. That is sickening to me. Do you know what lengths she suffered by doing this? You have to to be desperate to commit suicide via acid. If Black didn't absorb heat, then our migrant farm workers would wear black out in the fields. I hear the term Modernity used a lot to describe Women in the Middle East. Ha ha ha!! There is one women who is allowed to wear colorful Abaya's and she is a sign of Modernity? No. She is just a woman who has a better standard and is looked to by other women as a sign of hope. There is no Modernity in the Middle East. Camels are treated better than the women. Women are property. Where does it say this is acceptable in the Quaran? All I can tell you is that it makes the men look pretty weak and ineffective in their society. The only thing that brings me joy is that they all have to die sometime. Just knowing that they will be stuck in an eternal hell delights me to no end. Men who are supposed to be the scholars are sometimes the biggest offenders. My innocence was taken as a little girl. He destroyed my reproductive organs and I have never been able to conceive a child. I am just grateful everyday that I am an American Woman and no man has the right over me. I go to bed when I want. I wear what I want and I answer to no one. It is just me and God. I have always dressed modestly yet I get stared at by Muslims as if I were some type of sorceress. It is just funny how people can twist the narrative to suit their own needs. So be it. That is your religion and I am sad that you don't have the freedom of choice. Because to be quite honest? I have yet to meet a Muslim man who walks with God. I find most of them to be idiots. Why would I want to be with an idiot. For you women out there who have been shamed, harmed and have been controlled by men I hurt for you. For a woman's passport to be taken away so she can't leave I do believe sums up the insecurity and weakness of those men. Do you know how many women have tried to flee the Middle East? Because there is a lot and if the Middle East was so great then why can't women leave? They don't want to be there and yet you force them. There will never be Modernity in the Middle East as a result of this. Perhaps if they treated their women with respect and love they would not want to escape. Because who wants to escape paradise? I guess I am just thoroughly disgusted with men who hide behind Islam to justify being shitty people. Let them stay in the Middle East, don't bring that crap over here.
