The Selfish Customer

Confessions of a selfish customer.

By Mindy Donavon Published 5 years ago 4 min read

Nia Rich is the proud yet humble owner of Nia Boutique; she sells the most beautiful clothes. Her outfits are unique, clothing you would never find in Montreal. She caters to all sizes. What separates her from other black female entrepreneurs in Montreal's clothing industry is that she interacts with her clients.

Two cool things about being part of the Nia Boutique's family

1- One day you can be minding your own business and all of a sudden, there is a post with your name on it that says something like this;

2- Nia recognizes hard-working women, when she was on her break she decided to open her wall to the businesswomen on her private page to promote their own business, the other day she posted this up.

All this to say, she is back, and thank God! She came back right on time! Haven't you heard? Addition-Elle closed their doors last week. Honestly, I wasn't too sad about it. Their dresses weren't the best. However, they did have a decent lingerie collection. Trust me; when I heard that they were closing down, I ran to the nearest store. It was empty. I stocked up on bras; that's all they were suitable for anyways. The great news was that they were selling their bras for ten dollars. Seventy dollars worth bras were only for ten dollars. I was not going to miss out on that.

A couple of days after, I was scrolling down my Facebook news feed, and there she was... She had posted some new pre-orders.

SHUT THE FRONT DOOR!

I yelled so loud; my daughter ran out of the art room, looked at the door, and said;

Zizi: The door is not open, mother.

I laughed and explained to her that Nia's Boutique is back. I could see the lack of interest in her cute face. If the conversation isn't about Minecraft, dragons or ballet, she simply walks away...

No problem, I have friends!

I can share this news with my friends; then I realized I have not been calling my friends ever since Covid-19. I didn't want any visits.

I called them anyway! This was valuable news.

I got my girl Isabella on the telephone. I'm not too fond of texting; people always think that I am angry when I text them.

Me: Isa! Nia boutique is back. I am so excited!

Isabella: That is awesome, but who or what is Nia Boutique?

After expressing my joy that Nia Boutique was back and having all six of my closet friends ask (Who is Nia?), I realized, I never told my friends about Nia's Boutique. I've never invited them to like her page.

THE CONFESSION OF A SELFISH CUSTOMER.

Hail Mary full of grace I have a confession I must make

I am a selfish customer.

Let me explain, don't judge me just yet.

Remember life before Covid-19? Every other weekend there was an event. Montreal always had some event going on. You had to look good at these parties. The first time I purchased a Nia Boutique’s outfit, I wore it that very same night. My friend invited me to go to an uptown party. I didn’t want to go. It was not my regular Friday night routine, but I said let me give it a try.

I looked good. I felt great; why not. So, I walked in the place, and before I can find the bar, this beautiful lady walked up to me and said...

Hey twin!

We had on the same outfit: the same color and everything. No big deal. What I can say, the woman had excellent taste.

I mostly wear Nia Boutique clothes at church, and church members would always ask me where I got my clothes, and instead of being a good client, a loyal client, and send them a link to Nia's Boutique group page, I said

Oh, this? I got it from the US,.

Which is technically accurate, ladies! Do not judge me!

I know, I know I could have told them where to find it, but I enjoyed being the only one with such elegant pieces.

I DEVELOPED A SYSTEM, EACH TIME I DID GOOD IN MY DIET, I WOULD PUT SOME MONEY ASIDE AND SPEND IT AT NIA'S BOUTIQUE FOR THE FOLLOWING EVENTS...

Spring: Mother’s Day

Summer: Wedding Season

Fall: Thanksgiving

Winter: Holiday Season

I BECAME A LEGEND...

Her outfits make me feel like a queen! (Mothers Day 2018)

However, The Lord giveth and the Lord taketh away. I kid you not; when Nia's Boutique left, I felt like when Job from the Bible was stripped from his blessings.

Then I realized how selfish I was. I was punished for not being a good customer and sharing the glory of Nia’s Boutique.

Then Nia did something. she opened her page to us, her online business family, so we can have a platform to share our businesses and services to the public.

I felt sick to my stomach. I officially became...

THE SELFISH CUSTOMER.

Therefore, when I saw that Nia's Boutique was back. I called all my friends, told them the link where they can find Nia, and I explained how it works at Nia’s Boutique.

If you want to be treated and look like the queen you are, I have two words for you,

shopping
