Spooky Sixteen: My Halloween Costume Ideas

These ideas are worth checking out

By Mark Wesley Pritchard Published 4 months ago 3 min read

Greetings, Vocal readers! One of the holidays that I always look forward to is Halloween. This will be my 16th consecutive year celebrating the spookiest day of the year. I officially celebrated Halloween back in 2010 as an adult, where I dressed up as Superman (which was a last-minute option) and won first place in a costume contest at a Halloween party on campus. I was 22 at the time and was attending college. Why is that? My now estranged parents didn't "believe" in it, whatever that meant. I now realized that they didn't let me, or my siblings celebrate Halloween due to their religious beliefs, despite me being eager to dress up and go trick-or-treating with the other kids. Since then, I've won three more costume contests, including last year at work, where I dressed up as legendary baseball player Reggie Jackson, with a World Series trophy made by my now former cosplay craftsman, which I had with me. Halloween has no age limit and it's the one night of the year where you can be anyone you want. Just because you're an adult, it doesn't mean that you have to give up the things you like in order to appease anyone. I retired from cosplay in October 2024 after 10 awesome years and yes, I'll still dress up for Halloween every year.

I usually plan for Halloween around early to mid-September. It's better to start early than later. In this story, I'll share three of my Halloween costume ideas, because I want people to notice me and I'm eager to stand out. I do my best to not do the same characters every year. Anyway, let's go!

Ron Washington

He's one of two Texas Rangers managers that I liked. If you're a die-hard Rangers fan and knew his many sayings, such as That's the way Baseball Go, chances are that you're already familiar with him. He led the Rangers to back-to-back World Series appearances in 2010 and 2011. He was unable to secure a World Series title in either of those years, but he finally won one with the Atlanta Braves in 2021 and I was so happy for Wash. I would need to grow a mustache in order to make this costume a reality. I have no problems growing a mustache and I can always shave some of my hair off to embody the Ron Washington look. I can find the necessary items to pull this off. Currently, Ron Washington has been out for three months to tend with health issues. I wish him a speedy and full recovery and come back stronger next season. He was named the Angels manager in late 2023 and as I've stated before, I hope that he recovers from whatever he's dealing with and come back stronger in 2026. Speaking of angels, the last entry on this list has something to do with just that.

Freddie McFly

The next entry on my list is a very interesting idea. This is a combination of Freddie Mercury and Marty McFly. I like to plan my Halloween costumes in advance and meticulously. Finding the items I need to make this happen might be challenging, but it's not impossible either. A replica Hover Board, if I can find one, may or may not break my budget. As for the rest of the items, it shouldn't be a problem for me to afford them.

Angel in the Outfield

The final entry on this short list is a costume I'd proudly don. The 1994 Disney movie, Angels in the Outfield, is no doubt a classic and underrated. I loved this film, despite having a 31% score on Rotten Tomatoes. Last Halloween, I dressed up as Reggie Jackson, which was my final cosplay as a cosplayer last year and won first place in a costume contest at work. Even though I'm a Rangers fan, I like to go outside my comfort zone and dress up as different baseball players of other teams, especially from my favorite baseball movies. To put this costume together, you would need an 90s Angels jersey, baseball pants, cleats, baseball bat (optional), baseball glove (optional), a homemade halo, a pair of angel wings you can buy (or you can make them yourself), and an Angels baseball cap.

Honorable mention: Ace Ventura

So those are my Halloween costume ideas. Who is everyone going as for Halloween? Let me know in the comments. Be sure to give this story a like if you enjoyed it. One more thing: I'll post a link to my Reggie Jackson DIY down below, in case you would like a bit of inspiration for your next Halloween costume

I LOVE Halloween. I also believe in God and have religious beliefs and a lot of people in my church and around me frown upon the holiday. I don't really care though! I'm a makeup artist who has 3 kids, we NEVER miss a dress up opportunity and do ALL the things for Halloween. This year feels a little different though due to circumstances out of my control. Sadly, I don't think i will be dressing up -_- but it's ok. There's always next year!! I'm rooting for the Ace Ventura costume. One of my fav comedy movies :D
