How Do I Make a Wig Look Natural
Ways to Stop Your Wig Giving You Away

You are not clicking this link by chance. It's either you or your client who has either been wearing wigs for years or just started. Am I right?
A lot of you, as beginners, won't immediately feel comfortable with wearing wigs. You may worry that people see wearing alternative hair or the wig may fall off and get your hair secret exposed. That's why you don't have 100% confidence in wearing them.
In this post, I'm going to show you some practical tips that will hide your wig seamlessly. And your friend, even by looking closely, cannot tell you are a wig wearer.
And let's be real. All I can promise is that following these tips, people won't detect your hair secret. But it may still take you some time, let's say a couple of months to get used to wearing wigs. Dive in!
1. Lace and Monofilament Wigs –
As a wig wearer, it's not hard to know that wigs consist of a base and the hair attached to it. The most commonly used base materials are lace and monofilament, or a combination of the two. Some wigs also have their joints sealed with polyurethane.
Lace or Lace Front Wigs
Lace-front wigs are the most popular option. Most women pick lace front wigs for a great-looking front hairline.
As the lace at the front melds with the scalp better than any other material, once attached, it will fuse into your skin just like one piece.
And lace as a base material is the most breathable, as well, which allows for maximum comfort.
Wearing a lace wig, you can freely decide where to part your hair. If you are someone who styles your hair a lot, definitely go for lace or lace front wigs.
Monofilament Wigs
Monofilament is another popular wig cap. They are also pretty breathable, and realistic, but not as good as lace. But they are durable. You can use monofilament wigs for a long time.
2. How to Make a Synthetic Wig Look Real
Synthetic hair will not look as natural as human hair. Synthetic hair's most significant giveaway is that it looks too shiny. That cannot be easily changed, because that's what synthetic hair is like.
How to make a wig less synthetic?
1. Simply apply a small amount of dry shampoo or talcum powder to the wig hair.
2. Gently rub the powder in, till you won't see any of the product; done!
This method will instantly minimize the shine. But also make sure not to make the hair look too dull—don't put too much.
3. Position Your Wig Properly
Putting on your wig correctly by positioning it right will also save a lot of hassles. You can't expect the wig to look natural if the wig is tilted or not in its right position.
Positioning the wig correctly with your natural hairline and sides, the hair should look perfect. Remember, the most important spot is the front hairline.
These are the steps of how to do it properly:
1. Position the front of your wig on the forehead first, just above the eyebrows.
2. Hold the front and spread the wig over your head until you can feel the wig touching the nape of your neck.
3. Shuffle the wig slowly forward till it reaches your natural hairline.
4. Secure the wig as you prefer, and you are all good to go!
4. How to Make Your Wig Look More Natural
If you look at your hair closely, you will see that the hair isn't of equal length and thickness. There are wispy bits because hair strands grow at different speeds.
There are fully-grown strands and those newly sprouting. You gotta get the wispy bits right, making sure the wig hair blends well with your natural hair, including the newly grown sprouts.
You can trim a few areas of the wig around the sides. It will give you the illusion that new strands are growing among the fully grown ones.
The idea of this step is to make sure the hair looks more random and not precise. So you can do it by yourself without needing a professional stylist.
5. Make Sure the Parting is Right
If you are not a professional stylist, then you can choose one that's already got a parting in place.
The wigs with parting in place are the top-quality ones. So you don't need to part the hair again.
If the wig doesn't have a good top lace, a side part will make it much more natural—all you need is a little bit of concealer!
Bottom Line: If the wig looks too perfect, it will be a giveaway. As a beginner, you want the wig to look natural, and people around you won't see the big change in your appearance. You need to embrace imperfections, and the hair will look more natural. Treat it as your transition period.
6. A Fringe Is Key
The front hairline is the key. If looking fake or too neat, then it's a dead giveaway. To avoid all hassles to do with the front hairline, simply use a fringe. Whether a full fringe or not, the fringe will do the cover-up. If the wig doesn't have a fringe. Get your hairdresser to cut one for you just like they do a men’s toupee.
7. Colour Gradients Make Things Look Natural
Natural hair needs gradients. Your natural hair color isn't just one color. When you say someone's got dark brown hair, the hair simply can't be purely dark brown. Some strands are lighter or even darker than dark brown. Choosing wigs with a root color mixed with high or low lights will make the hair look very natural.
8. Try An Up-Do
Similar to various types of toupee haircuts, if you are still trying to figure out a great way of wearing wigs, a loose-up do is a great choice. Try some messy styles. The wig will look even more natural if you snip a few wispy bits into it. Avoid a high ponytail, as it will make the hairline too visible if you aren't 100% comfortable with it.

Take a Selfie!
Take some pictures. How you see yourself in a picture is probably how others will see you. The pictures will help you to realize if some amendments will be needed. Equally, asking friends and family what they think of your new look is always going to be a good approach.
