"House of David”: A Fresh Take on a Timeless Biblical Epic

How a New Series Brings the Story of David to Life for Modern Audiences

The story of David, the shepherd boy who became Israel’s greatest king, is one of the most iconic tales in the Bible. Now, it’s being reimagined for television in House of David, a new series that promises to blend biblical accuracy with cinematic storytelling. Created by filmmakers Jon Erwin and Jon Gunn, the show aims to capture the humanity, drama, and epic scale of David’s journey while making it relatable for today’s audiences.

Why David’s Story Needed a Series, Not a Movie

Jon Erwin, one of the creators, explains that David’s life is too vast and layered to fit into a single movie. “The life of David is an odyssey,” he says. “It’s so rich and complex that it had to be a series.” The show follows David’s rise from a humble shepherd to a revered king, contrasting his journey with the tragic downfall of King Saul.

Erwin and Gunn wanted to ensure the series felt authentic and human. “We didn’t just want it to be biblical or epic; we wanted it to be relatable,” Gunn adds. “We wanted to bring these characters to life in a way that resonates with modern viewers.”

The Story: A Tale of Rise and Fall

House of David stars Michael Iskander as David, Ali Suliman as King Saul, and Stephen Lang as the prophet Samuel. The series explores David’s unlikely ascent to power, guided by divine will and anointed by Samuel. At the same time, it delves into Saul’s struggles with pride and insecurity, which ultimately lead to his downfall.

The show’s synopsis reads, “As one leader falls, another must rise.” This central theme drives the narrative, highlighting the tension between David and Saul as their paths intertwine. From David’s famous battle with Goliath to his complex relationships in Saul’s court, the series promises to bring these well-known events to life in a fresh and engaging way.

Balancing Biblical Accuracy and Modern Storytelling

One of the biggest challenges for the creators was staying true to the Bible while making the story accessible to modern audiences. To achieve this, they worked closely with historians, biblical scholars, and rabbinic consultants. Even small details, like the length of Samuel’s hair (Nazarites were forbidden to cut their hair), were carefully considered.

“We wanted to ensure that the specific details of the Bronze Age were woven into the show in a way that felt authentic and interesting,” Gunn explains. “The more you lean into the specificity and correctness of that, the more interesting the show becomes.”

The creators also sought advice from Dallas Jenkins, the creator of The Chosen, a popular faith-based series. Their goal was to honor the sacred text while making the story feel new and exciting.

A Cinematic Experience for All Audiences

Filmed in Greece, House of David boasts an epic scale made possible by Amazon’s support. “For a platform this big to support us with the resources we needed to tell this story, and still allow us creative control, is unprecedented,” Erwin says.

The series aims to appeal to both believers and skeptics. “You don’t have to know the Bible to enjoy this series,” Gunn notes. “We’ve created a compelling, cinematic experience that stands on its own.” For those familiar with the Bible, the show offers new insights and surprises. “Even if you know your Bible well, we wanted to surprise the audience constantly with plot twists and character interactions,” Erwin adds.

Why David’s Story Still Matters Today

David’s journey is often compared to modern hero’s journeys, like Lord of the Rings or Star Wars. “There’s a timeless quality to the story of a young person rising from humble beginnings to fulfill their destiny,” Erwin reflects. “I think anyone who loves those kinds of stories will immediately connect with David’s journey, even if they’re not familiar with the Bible.”

The creators hope the series will spark curiosity and conversation about the Bible’s timeless truths. “We hope this show sparks curiosity, conversation, and ultimately, a deeper appreciation for the timelessness of the Bible,” Erwin says.

Release Details and What to Expect

House of David premieres on Prime Video on February 27, with the first three episodes available on release day. The series will continue with weekly episodes, culminating in its finale on April 3.

Produced by Wonder Project, Amazon MGM Studios, Nomadic Pictures, Argonauts, Kingdom Story Company, and Lionsgate Television, House of David is shaping up to be a landmark production in biblical drama. With its blend of historical accuracy, epic storytelling, and relatable characters, the series promises to bring one of the Bible’s most beloved stories to life for a new generation.

House of David is more than just a retelling of a biblical story; it’s a cinematic journey that explores themes of destiny, leadership, and humanity. Whether you’re a believer, a skeptic, or simply a fan of epic storytelling, this series offers something for everyone.
