Fashion Time Capsule: Nostalgia I Didn’t Know Existed.
I never experienced these decades, but I always wanted to see what it was like.

I was born in the late 90s (‘99 to be exact), but I never really experienced the 90s era, because mainly I would’ve been too young to mentally remember and also because I was born at the end of the decade. Growing up, I mostly saw fashion in the late 2000’s and 2010’s. I wore the matching tracksuits, merch from TV shows, and vests with jeans growing up. (whenever I wasn’t wearing the school uniform)
Now that I am 22, I have been personally trying to figure out what fashion style/aesthetic truly suits me for the past few years. I have been able to learn different fashion eras due to social media starting when I became a teenager in high school when I had to dress up for decades day during homecoming week. I first started seeing the 90s aesthetic, due to rewatching movies and tv shows I looked at growing up: Family Matters, The Fresh Prince of Bel Air, Full House, Sister, Sister, and the movie Clueless. It was me watching Clueless that caused me to really like the 90s fashion, and many aesthetics.
With the 90s fashion, I loved the clothing as well as the hairstyles! Even though I didn’t really get a chance to experience the era myself, looking at pictures made me love the fashion! I would personally love to bring back some of the outfits, and make them not look outdated. I realize that while I was in university, 90s fashion slowly made a return, due to 90s themed parties that were held once a year. I also got some hindsight from there as well. (Pinterest was also a HUGE help while trying to put together an outfit.)
The next era of fashion I would love to see make a comeback is... yes, the 80s! The hair, the makeup, and the use of boldness of color in the outfits, I always loved them! I wish that personally I was bold enough to wear an 80s outfit in public today (I am mostly terrified that I would poorly execute it, which would make me sad and frustrated). One of these days, I’ll go the whole nine yards on an 80s inspired outfit. Anyway, to get back on track, with the 80s, I would personally love to see a good bit of the fashion of both the women and men make a comeback. (I’m not too crazy about leg warmers personally, but I know for working out it was a key accessory based on looking at photos).
Now to shift gears to a list of specifics. Here is what I specifically would love to see make a comeback from both of these decades. I briefly mentioned what I loved from the decades, so now here is what I specifically would love to see.
80s Fashion
• THE JACKETS. If anyone knows me well, knows that I love a good jacket. Cropped and regular sized jackets were one of the key pieces of fashion in the 80s. (They were either in denim or in bold colors). I would personally would purchase some in bold colors.
•BABYDOLL DRESSES. Being a taller individual, finding dresses that are a suitable length is usually a challenge while looking at today’s fashion (thankful for skater dresses, sundresses, and maxi dresses today), so while babydoll dresses might be a bit of a hit or miss on me. However, I would love to see more babydoll dresses, because they are very cute to me.
•THE HAIR. Yes. The big hair. I don’t know why, but I always been intrigued with the iconic big hair associated with the 80s. (I am curious to know how long it took someone to do their hair everyday, I bet it was a bit of a race against time especially if you were aiming towards perfection.)
Now again, switching gears.
90s Fashion
With 90s fashion, the color scheme compared to the 80s, is less “out there” with the boldness, and with silhouette the clothes are baggier.
• WINDBREAKERS. I only saw windbreakers twice growing up, and one of them was my sister’s from her cheerleading days in the 90s. I would love to see windbreakers make more of a comeback, because to me, they were actually really comfortable to wear and goes well with a good pair of jeans!
• BAGGY PANTS. There is a difference between wearing oversized/baggy pants versus “being in a flood”. Baggy pants today for me are probably one of my favorite things to lounge around in. I would love to see more people wear them, especially for the sake of comfort.
•ACID WASH JEANS. Aesthetically, they look pretty great and possibly comfortable to wear. (which states a lot because I detest wearing jeans, I rarely wear them.) A good pair of acid wash jeans with a white tshirt and a pair of sneakers is what I would pair the outfit with.
