Fashion or Fail...

Somethings Have Got to Go

By Nunchi GoyaPublished 5 years ago 3 min read

2020 was interesting for fashion because it was almost pointless to dress up when no one could go anywhere. Face masks became mandatory and people got creative with them, either sporting bling-y masks or coordinated outfits they became fun and aside from the necessity of them I loved that they became incorporated into the 2020 fashion trends.

However some trends just weren’t it or rode the line precariously. Cottage core is an aesthetic, in your face tiger print verged on tacky and the 90’s nostalgia was so perfect for a time that had become so chaotic and uncertain. Maybe we’ll always reach for for our denim jackets and doc martins in times of distress. Not every trend was a hit and not all of them should stick around but not necessarily for the look of them

.

First up, I am talking about fringe. While it looks cute and is definitely its own aesthetic, a strong one at that, but have you had your cute fringe bag beyond your door? Maybe out with you for a meal or any place where you’ve had to set it down, like your car. The fringe is a cute statement but untangling that bag at every stop or the extra pieces getting caught in the car door or stuck in the spaces of the shopping cart at the grocery store. You can not take fringe anywhere without it getting caught on something. Good job you cute fly away fringe, you’re caught again. This is why we can’t have nice things.

Fringe is common in some cultural garments and when it’s danced in it is just beautiful but how does it not get tangled? I want to know the secrets so that I too may carry a fringy bag and not get it caught on every corner.

Fringe while inconvenient was not the worst trend of 2020. Low rise jeans make almost nobody feel good. They sit at the widest part of your hip and have no naturally flattering angles. Accompanied with that, hope you don’t have Don’t dare eat anything that could bloat you because those jeans will show it off to everyone and I don’t know about you but my self esteem is not that high. We already have seen this and trends may repeat but the past is also there to learn from and there is a lot of regret on this style.

The only thing that may be worse than the low rise jeans is latex. Kim K wore it and the world said “monkey see monkey do.” As a seamstress by trade, I cannot fathom why someone would choose to wear latex pants when leather or faux leather exists. It’s not comfy, it’s not cute and it’s just not it. If anything needs to go away it is this.

Lizzo rocked the cutest micro mini purse and it was so cute when she did it it was cute it was fun and it was just for the look. In day to day use, however this purselette is useless. It can barely fit a Chapstick let alone your phone, or a card. Maybe you could squeeze a few tightly rolled bills if you’re talented enough. As far as looks go, it was fun at first sight but seeing those things in day to day is just comical. Attach it to a key chain and maybe we can talk but as far as a functional or even stylistic piece of fashion I’m gonna have to say goodbye.

2020 was filled with some interesting headliners, stylistic trial and error but I think I speak for all of us when I say good riddance 2020
