Tola once invited me to a party and the questions that came to mind to ask were; who’s the host? What’s the celebration about? Where’s it happening? etc. Chill! It’s not what you’re thinking…My reason for asking was that I wanted to know the caliber of people I was going to be sharing a space with. I wanted to know what class of people I would be engaging with. I wanted to know what aura to expect and if it was an event I would be comfortable in. I wanted to know all these so it could inform my decision on what STYLE to dress in if I ended up accepting the invite. Surprised that my reasoning and reason had nothing to do with the other gender? Please don’t be.

Women dress for a million other reasons and I can tell you for a fact that the other gender comes last on the list as a reason, that’s if they made it to the list in the first place. Ouch! This truth must hurt. This statement is up for argument, and so be my guest. First things first, let it be known that for women, it’s inherent to be feminine; to look soft, attractive, graceful, and just sweet. It’s first nature so they naturally have to dress nice…by default.

Women love to walk into a place and all heads turn to stare at them, women love the attention that comes with stealing the show. Women want to make a statement and leave a lasting impression with their choice of dressing. And guess what? Their target audience for this statement and impression are their fellow women. Funny right? Here’s why; women are naturally in competition with themselves. Trust me, we do not agree with this statement. It’s usually a love-hate relationship with women oftentimes, please don’t hate me for this my loves but I think it’s so obvious that the blind can see this truth.

Women do the gossiping, they are the best conveyors of the gist of who rocked a dress better at an event and who didn’t. Do you want to know who killed it in an event or who didn’t? ask the next lady. So they’d go all out in choosing the best fit, best hair, best bag, best shoes, best jewelry, best cologne, and the list continues, all in a bid to consciously or unconsciously make it to the lips of the women reporters on duty.

"I mean even Salad gets dressed to impress"

Now, this is not to rule out the fact that women also want to get noticed by the other gender because of course why not. It’s just to say that the other gender isn’t the bulk of the reason why women dress so well. Women love to be noticed by the other gender yes… I mean the other gender gets moved by what they see first so if she’s not looking good for starters he won’t want to move to her. But it’s beyond that.

"It’s not just about the other gender, it’s more about what women represent in the grand scheme of life"

Back to my story. The event finally came and of course, I had enough information that guided the style I chose or so I thought because, to my greatest surprise, I felt like a square trying to fit into a circle hole. I STOOD OUT, in a bad way. It was more of a formal event than a seemingly casual event like she had presented to me. I was so pissed and you might wonder why so pissed? because I would be easily noticed right? I mean isn't that the real deal? Well, that wasn't the idea for me, and yes for other women too. I just wanted to blend in and have fun, not be in the spotlight to steal the show or something of the sort. I got stares that said a lot and honestly, I was embarrassed at some point. Anyway, I stayed because I had arrived already and also, and it was quite a lovely event packed with lots of goodies. The event came to an end and I made my way home.

My loves, the story for today isn't about me so I'll save the details of everything that happened in between the event for some other time.
