Clothes shopping for your family can be a chore. There are so many choices to be made and racks upon racks of tops and bottoms to sort through. The options are endless and can be overwhelming and confusing, especially when you are selecting clothing for several family members at once.

When you find yourself needing to shop there are a few tips you can keep in mind and areas where you can direct your focus to make clothes shopping easier and even a fun activity to be enjoyed.

Style

Each family member probably has their own unique style that they like to convey, so it's important to keep their preferences in mind when you select clothing for them. Style can be influenced by many things and change quickly, especially in children, teenagers, and young adults who put more emphasis on what their peers or celebrity idols are wearing. The style of clothing that they wear can determine how they interact with their peers and where they believe they fit into a group. While it's expected that kids will gravitate to what most of their friends agree upon as the best things to wear, it's a good idea to foster a sense of individuality into your children so they learn that it's okay to stand out and be themselves.

Perhaps the best way to approach shopping for those that have particular tastes, is to choose a few solid pieces to form the basis of the wardrobe. These can then be mixed and matched with many different outfits and be either dressed up or dressed down to suit the occasion. Some essentials to always have are a few pairs of good fitting jeans, some basic solid colored shirts, and a few pairs of good shoes. White leather sneakers are a fantastic option. They look great with most any outfit and hold up to frequent wear.

After you select the core of the wardrobe, you can then supplement these often worn staples with more style specific pieces that can be switched out as tastes change. It's much easier to replace a few pairs of pants and shirts on occasion than finding that your child suddenly refuses to wear any of the clothing that they have decided is out of style or no longer suits them. Having a basic wardrobe of high quality pieces will save you a lot of time and effort in the future. They can be the go-to outfit on busy mornings or when indecision makes putting together a look for the day too involved.

Function

The function of the clothing that you choose is another aspect that you need to consider. For example, are you choosing a wardrobe for school, work, or for play? This will have a big impact on the types of clothes that you should select. The function of the outfit will also impact the styles of clothing that are suitable. Most schools and places of work have dress codes, so you need to make sure that all the pieces you purchase fit within the guidelines. It's best to be a little more conservative with what you choose when it comes to more professional settings.

Clothes meant to be worn for leisure time have a lot more freedom in style and function. This is usually where you let individual personalities shine through. The types of interests and hobbies that each family member favors will determine the types of clothing that are appropriate. If you have a child that's interested in sports, then casual wear that can be washed frequently is best. For someone that favors artistic pursuits, stain resistant pieces, or a cover up would be a good idea.

Durability

The quality of the clothing that you purchase should be another consideration that you make. High quality purchases may require a bigger upfront investment, but they will likely hold up better and be able to be worn and enjoyed for a much longer time period than more cheaply made options. Take this into consideration when you go shopping. Are the clothes you choose something that you love and will want to wear for a long time? Children's clothing and special clothing used as uniforms often take a beating and should be made of quality material to limit the number of times they need replaced.

Price

Price is another factor when shopping for your family. You want to select high quality goods that your family will feel good about wearing and enjoy putting on each day, but you don't want to spend more than is necessary, especially for younger children and that may quickly grow out of clothing and require a new size.

There is a lot to consider when you go clothes shopping. While it may seem like a daunting task, selecting new clothes can be a fun thing to do. It can even be used as a family bonding experience, to spend some time together and learn more about each other's tastes and opinions.
