It's late August, two weeks before school starts in September. I'm scratching my hair in the mirror until it's practically bald—the yellow hair I've been growing all summer is dry and split, and the newly grown black roots look like they've been wearing a black hat, as if they've just been dug out of the earth. Just as I'm sighing over my straightening iron, my mom pulls out a half wig from the closet: "Try this! Your cousin wore it this summer and it turned heads.
