Karnal Sher Khan Shaheed: A True Hero of Pakistan
Remembering the brave son of Pakistan on his 26th martyrdom anniversary.

A Brave Son of the Soil
Every year on 5th July, Pakistan remembers one of its bravest soldiers — Captain Karnal Sher Khan Shaheed (Nishan-e-Haider). He gave his life for his country during the Kargil War in 1999. His courage, loyalty, and love for Pakistan made him a national hero. He is not only remembered in Pakistan, but also respected by those who once fought against him.
His Name Was “Karnal”
Many people think “Karnal” means “Colonel,” but that’s not true in this case. Karnal was his real name, given by his family. He was named after his great-grandfather. He was born on 1st January 1970 in Nawan Killi, a village in Swabi District, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
From a young age, he was known for being kind, honest, and brave. He always wanted to serve his country.
His Journey to the Army
At first, Karnal Sher Khan joined the Pakistan Air Force as a technician. But soon, he decided to follow his true passion — becoming a soldier. In 1990, he joined the Pakistan Military Academy (PMA) and became an officer in the 27th Sindh Regiment.
He worked hard and earned the respect of his seniors and juniors. He always led from the front and took care of his fellow soldiers like a brother.
The Kargil War and His Bravery
In 1999, Pakistan and India faced a serious military conflict in the mountains of Kargil, located near the Line of Control (LoC). Captain Karnal Sher Khan and his men were sent to hold high positions in the freezing mountains.
Despite the dangerous situation, he stayed strong. He helped build bunkers, carried weapons, and stood beside his soldiers day and night. He was not afraid of the enemy or the weather. He only thought about protecting Pakistan.
When Indian forces attacked to take back the area, Captain Karnal Sher Khan fought bravely. He pushed back many attacks and even entered enemy territory during counterattacks. In one battle, he and a small group of soldiers defended their post for hours. Even when he was surrounded, he kept fighting until he embraced shahadat (martyrdom) on 5th July 1999.
Respected Even by the Enemy
After the battle, something surprising happened. The Indian Army wrote a letter praising Captain Karnal Sher Khan’s bravery. They told Pakistan about his courage and the way he fought with honor. This is very rare in the history of war.
Because of his bravery and sacrifice, the Government of Pakistan awarded him the Nishan-e-Haider, which is the highest military award in the country. Only eleven soldiers in Pakistan’s history have received this medal, and Karnal Sher Khan is one of them.
A Legacy That Lives On
Karnal Sher Khan’s name is written in gold in the history of Pakistan. He proved that true love for the country means giving everything—even your life. His story is taught in schools, and many places are named after him.

What We Learn from Him
Captain Karnal Sher Khan was not just a soldier. He was a symbol of honesty, bravery, and patriotism. He showed that age, rank, or background do not matter when it comes to loving your country.
In one of his letters, he wrote to his mother:
"If I die, tell my mother I died for my country. She should not cry, but be proud."
These are not just words. They show the heart of a true hero.
