Introducing the Vocal+ Summer Writing Series

12 prompts. $15,000+ in prizes. A summer of writing.

By Justin @ VocalPublished 7 months ago Updated 7 months ago 2 min read

Challenges on Vocal have always been about more than winning.

We believe their value is in the process. They help create a spark, offer structure, and help writers stay connected to their craft.

And they're not just about the cash prizes. They're about hitting a deadline, pushing your creative boundaries, and creating something real from a simple prompt.

Since launching, we’ve run more than 250 Challenges, and you’ve submitted over 230,000 stories. That's a ton of stories. To put that in perspective, if each story averaged 400 words (discounting for poetry), that's over 92 million words. That's enough to rewrite The Great Gatsby about 2,000 times, or stretch your words the globe 15 times.

Every so often, we like to group our Challenges into series. From the Vocal+ Fiction Awards to the original Summer Fiction Series, we’ve seen what happens when a strong creative spark meets the power of our community, and the kind of storytelling that follows.

So we’re bringing it back.

Introducing the Vocal+ Summer Writing Series: 12 prompts, six fiction, six poetry, built to keep you inspired all summer long. All 12 drop today, June 13, 2025, with each one closing weekly throughout the summer.d

We’re also changing how winners are selected.

Instead of one first place, one second place, 15 runners-up and 10 honorable mentions, we’re expanding the recognition:

  • 5 winners will each receive $200
  • 15 runners-up will receive $15
  • 10 honorable mentions will receive $5

It’s a way to highlight more voices, reward more writers, and make sure that great work doesn’t go unnoticed.

As it says in the title, these Challenges are available exclusively to Vocal+ members. And remember, your subscription doesn’t just give you access, it helps fund these prizes and fuels more opportunities for creators across the Vocal community.

Without further ado, here are your (optional) summer assignments:

Do authors retain rights and full ownership of work submitted? Is any of that ownership transferred to Vocal when a poem or story wins the cash prize?

I wish you had contest for non members. It's hard for me to want to join vocal plus when I can't even try the benefits beforehand.

Hi, Justin! Can you do SOME JUSTICE here? I'm Using VPN to make this comment... And I really want to get a response this time. Ofc, you know this as well, that you've banned Vocal in Pakistan and some other Asian countries. As much as I know, it's India and Pakistan... At least can I know, Why? Not to mention 5-6 different emails that I've already sent to Vocal Support about this matter, but one email to you as well, Justin. Is that how we get treated? I'm really writing this, 'cause I miss publishing stories on VOCAL. Vocal didn't respond to a single one of my emails. Do I use AI-CONTENT? Have I violated any VOCAL guidelines? Please, at least answer it. I could be using VPN to publish, but most of the times even VPN doesn't work, and I think it's not the correct way to get access to the site. SO, what do we do now? If you were to show us the exit path, you should've at least said goodbye! (Another day, another approach to get Vocal to respond to me)

  • These are excellent challenges. 🌹🌹🌹🌹

Intriguing challenges and lots of variety! Swell!

  • Yayyyy, I'm so happy that there would be more winners and Honourable Mention would get prize money too! 😍😍😍😍😍😍

This is so exciting! I think there’s a mistake though, it says “Write a poem built from a memory that won’t let go.” For two of them.

Back again after looking through the prompts more closely and these are 🔥! These are 100% the kind of prompts that drew me into Vocal! Intentional but open ended too! And so much time to let ideas permeate the creative mind! Thank you, Vocal!! (Still think there may have been a mistake with the one that I already mentioned below, but aside from that ❤️)

I've been kind of lukewarm on some of the prompts from challenges lately but some of these are really speaking to me! Looking forward to it
