Shipping Stupidity before Thanksgiving
A shipping mishap mere days before Thanksgiving.
It was in November 2025 that I decided to order a punching bag stand off Amazon. I was already slowly setting up a small training space in the garage at home. Not exactly a fully set home gym or anything fancy. But it's good enough some decent legroom to beat some holiday stress out. And burn off the Thanksgiving feast in the process. At least that was the idea. When the package arrived, I set it down into the garage so I can assemble the punching bag stand when I got a whole day off work. I started by putting the bottom part of it together first. So I'd have a better idea on a spot to really beat the punching bag. And when I started on the central support for the stand the next day. I noticed that something was wrong. The foot parts that hold the frame in place came in 2 right foot parts. Instead of the actual left and right each. Or to be more precise, 2 pieces of the same side. I never saw it coming. Let alone expect a major setback like that.
It wasn't hard to guess what had happened. Someone made a mistake during the packing process. Someone who didn't notice 2 pieces of the same side going into the box. Even while covering them in bubble wrap. Someone who messed up on a simple packing job before shipping. A stupid mistake that can setback the person who ordered the product. A stupid mistake done by a stupid person. I've had a plan for that punching bag stand. Simple and to the point. With winter approaching fairly soon. It would be smart to have something to help with overall fitness training when snowstorms make it hard to leave home. But now... I can't even use it... I spent over $135, plus tax, on Amazon for that punching bag stand. And I'll never be able to fully assemble it. Because a stupid thoughtless person in the packing lane messed up on a simple job. But I have no way of knowing who that person is. I did try to look up a replacement part for the model of punching bag stand I've got. With zero success...
That punching bag stand was suppose to be a worthwhile investment. But it turned into a serious setback. One that I see no clear way to recover from. So I began looking up ways to deal with setbacks done by stupid people. The slip up with the stand's part might have been a mistake. And I did order the stand during Amazon's Black Friday week. Stress from holiday sales may have allowed this mistake to happen. But I personally don't see that as an excuse for messing up an order.
Am I upset that my order doesn't have the part I need? Yes, I got so angry that I couldn't think straight. I also found it difficult to stay calm over a mistake someone else made. A mistake that could have easily been corrected before the bag stand was shipped. If I had known a mistake like that would happen. I would have ordered a punching bag with a standing base. My only other option would be to return it. Somehow... Even I could successfully arrange it. I would need a new box to ship it with. And little bags for the smaller parts for the stand.
I honestly don't know how I should tune up my own fitness training when someone else's mistake impeded my plans to get in better shape during winter. But I also know pinning blame on some nameless stranger isn't productive. Because it won't change anything. I'm trying to reframe the situation. Try to see past a failure that's of someone else's making. But what could I possibly learn from someone else's screw up? I can acknowledge that my own intention was to make use of a punching bag I already own with a steel frame stand. But I have no way of knowing the intention of the person who packed it with the wrong part. I can prevent mistakes from my own actions. But never from other people.
Still, that punching bag stand would have been helpful if it had all the proper frame parts. I'm upset because I had to endure a stressful weekend before Thanksgiving. And for what? A 50 lb steel frame stand I can't use safely? Without all the right parts holding the frame together. The stand wouldn't be able to hold the punching bag in a stable manner. Much less withstand a single strike to the bag. Let alone a single training session. Finding the right sized box is a start to returning the stand for a refund. And maybe something good might come from this disaster.
