Glass and Sand

An abstract of Our metamorphosis

By Antoni De'LeonPublished 10 months ago 5 min read

I write in abstract, from a place within myself, a transitory philosophical non-representational 'speak', not of real life happenings, which is expected of me, but of a more evolved view of life wrapped in a metamorphosis of my thoughts. I have no life shattering tale to tell...or maybe I am averse to the telling...of that I am unsure.

Mayhap I am seeing through a glass darkly.

The contemplation of sand and souls.

Glass: sand (silica), soda ash (sodium carbonate), and limestone (calcium oxide), are heated to high temperatures until they melt and form a new material: glass.

Imagine the quiet, untouched expanse of sand, sparkling in the sunlight, each grain a tiny fragment of Earth's ancient history

To transform this ordinary substance into glass requires an extraordinary force---a fire so intense it reshapes the sand, turning it into something transparent, reflective, and enduring. It’s a moment where potential meets transformation, creating something entirely new.

Now, return to the origins of a people before existence...the quiet, unformed possibility.

Like grains of sand, the building blocks of life lie dormant, waiting for a spark. And when that spark ignites---a combination of biology, chance, and love...it reshapes raw potential into something extraordinary: a person with unique thoughts, feelings, and dreams.

Both processes---the creation of glass from sand and the beginning of life---are acts of transformation. They start with something humble and ordinary, then undergo a change so profound it produces something unparalleled. Glass holds light, bends reality, and serves as a window to the world, much like a human being illuminates life, reshapes experiences, and offers their own unique perspective.

Both processes share a beautiful symmetry. They each begin with unassuming building blocks, which undergo specific transformations driven by energy (heat in glass; biochemical reactions in life). The end result? Something intricate, purposeful, and extraordinary.

............

The stories begin in two vastly different worlds---one a sun-drenched desert of shifting sands, the other a primordial Earth teeming with potential but devoid of life. Both are silent, waiting for transformation.

In the desert, grains of sand lie undisturbed, concealing tales of the eons they've endured. One day, a craftsman gathers the sand, mixing it with soda ash and limestone, humble ingredients destined for greatness. The sand dreams of change, but transformation demands intensity---a fire so fierce it melts the grains into a molten river of possibility. As the craftsman shapes the molten glass, the substance remembers the fire that remade it and yields to its new form. Slowly, it cools, solidifying into something transparent and enduring, a vessel of light and reflection.

Meanwhile, on early Earth, chaos reigns.

By Toby Elliott on Unsplash

Volcanic eruptions send plumes of ash skyward, lightning crackles across the turbulent skies, and the oceans churn with chemicals. In this dynamic crucible, simple molecules—amino acids, lipids, nucleotides—gather like characters in search of a story. They collide, bond, and form complex structures, assembling into something extraordinary. Over time, they create the first cell, the ancestor of all life. This tiny cell, delicate yet resilient, holds the secret to replication, the essence of survival.

Conversely....

Eve eats an apple in the Eden Garden.

And the worlds of glass and life unfold their stories. The glass, once fragmented sand, now serves as a window to the world, capturing light and bending it into rainbows. The cell, once a cluster of molecules, evolves into countless forms of life, each with its own journey, its own light to shine.

Both transformations speak to the power of change, where humble beginnings yield remarkable outcomes.

...........

The Science Behind the Creation of Life

Life begins with organic molecules such as amino acids (for proteins), nucleotides (for DNA/RNA), lipids (for membranes), and sugars. Building blocks.

Through processes like polymerization, these molecules form complex structures, such as proteins and nucleic acids, which perform essential functions. Combining chemistry,

Cells arise when these molecules organize into membrane-bound systems, creating a controlled environment for biochemical reactions. Cell formation.

Key to life is the ability to replicate, which DNA or RNA enables. Over time, genetic mutations and natural selection lead to diverse forms of life. Replication and Evolution.

Thanks to Environmental Conditions---Early Earth provided the right conditions---volcanic activity, chemical-rich oceans, and possibly lightning or hydrothermal vents---to kickstart these processes.

Conversely...

God created the world in seven days. "Let there be light, and there was light".

The moral of the story

The stories of glass and life echo one another, they present as tales of transformation born from fire and chaos. The glass holds the light, bending and refracting it into rainbows. The cell holds the spark of life, carrying it forward into an endless waltz of growth and connection. Both remind us of the beauty found in change, the extraordinary hidden within the ordinary. They are windows to worlds we could never imagine...each one miraculous in its own right.

Personal observations:

The metamorphosis of glass and my beginnings.

As I muse upon the metamorphosis of glass and the origins of life, I am struck by how both stories reflect transformation and potential. The journey from raw sand to radiant glass mirrors the untapped possibilities within all of us before existence---silent, waiting, ready for the spark that reshapes us. Like the grains of sand that endure fire, and the molecules that navigate chaos to create life, each of us carries within us stories of many types of transformation.

I find meaning in reflecting on these processes for they remind me of the beauty found in beginnings---the quiet promise of something more, even when the world feels still. Glass inspires me to see transparency and light in my own evolution. Life: teaches me that even amid disorder, great creation is possible. Both remind me that change is not the end but the beginning.

By weaving these narratives together, I celebrate the wonder of existence and transformation, finding strength in the parallels between the simple grains of sand and the infinite complexity of life itself. These reflections echo in the very essence of my existence...where I aim to illuminate moments into something meaningful.

The butterfly, the ultimate metamorphosis.

The forest is quiet, a tiny being slumbers within a fragile casing.

Bing AI

The world outside hums with life, but within, there is stillness---a poignant pause before transformation. The cocoon, delicate yet sturdy, cradles the promise of change.

Days pass, the forest surrenders to the moon, and within the cocoon, the unthinkable unfolds. The once-crawling creature dissolves into chaos, a formless state that seems neither destruction nor creation, but something in between. Molecules rearrange, instincts awaken, and a blueprint for wings takes shape.

Then, as dawn stretches its golden fingers across the leaves, the cocoon begins to tremble. It opens, revealing a creature born of quiet turmoil---a butterfly. Its wings, painted in vibrant hues of sunlight and shadow, unfurl with tender grace. There is no hesitation, no backward glance, just a leap into the air, where it dances with the wind.

Bing AI

The butterfly's metamorphosis is also my story of surrender and renewal---a journey through stillness, chaos, and emergence. From earthbound crawl to sky-bound flight, it embodies the poetry of transformation... and though fragile, truly can be extraordinary.

Life is extraordinary!!!

Nice one dear you are doing a fantastic job keep it up 💖

  • Change is our only constant, as is the struggle that accompanies it. I enjoyed the metaphor of the butterfly you used here, Antoni. Poignant.

Very well-wrought! The metaphor of the butterfly is universally understood as a symbol of the struggle of transformation, but that of sand and glass, for some of us, may be more apt. You did a great job of weaving all these symbols together here!

This is a very deep story. I went to the museum of glass in Corning , NY so I understand The Sand and Volcano corelation in your story 🥰

Sand souls and metamorphosis of the butterfly. Great analogies, I enjoyed the psychology of it all.

This is great— a contagious sense of being in awe of the earth. The transformations you wrote about are pretty mind blowing, and so easy to overlook. I appreciate you taking a microscope to the little miracles that are so easy to take for granted

Beautiful work Antoni! Very inspiring! This was the perfect story for Springtime!

  • Oh wow, that was so profound. And also seemed like a science lesson. So awesomeeee!
