Everything We Do is Magick
How a Charismatic Pastor Became a Chaos Mage

ALONE IN A CROWD
I don't remember exactly what age I became aware of the above understanding of the nature of existence. What I do remember are the looks, at least most of them, when I asked questions about such. The Age of Reason had extracted all (or so it was thought) of the mysticism from "science", but the advances of quantum physics have revealed that the mysticism and the hard science are inseparable. That there is something beyond our understanding that holds everything together....but, I'm getting ahead of myself.
I do remember, at the age of six, trying to bend spoons and move objects with my mind. I was a voracious reader, and had probably read about someone who could do this. A few years later, after I learned about "atoms", I postulated on how I could align my atomic body to pass through "solid" objects. I've since realized, of course, that I would also have to align the atoms in the object. These were the ideas that prompted the questions that inevitably left me "alone in a crowd"...an oddity in almost all situations.
THE SPIRITUAL "CHOPPED KITCHEN"
I love to cook...and I really enjoy watching the Food Network program "Chopped". The program consists of a competition among four chefs to produce the best dishes from baskets of random ingredients. The chefs get to choose utensils and machines and ingredients they like to utilize. These become their "Chopped Kitchen". I use this analogy in my Introduction to Chaos Magick content to share my beliefs on what happens "pre-birth"...that we choose certain "utensils, and machines, and ingredients" to bring with us to create this NEW life. These consist of physical characteristics, emotional baggage, phobias, and family situations. These are the "opportunities" we have presented ourselves to create peace out of chaos.
Sometimes, the Chefs on the program produce dishes that are inedible. To cut through the early part of my life, let's just say that the "dishes" I produced would have been "Chopped".
A SPIRITUAL EXPERIENCE
In my early 30's, I had a spiritual experience. It expressed through the dogma I was most familiar with (Christianity). Within 3 years I went from a career in hospitality to running a street ministry in my grandparents' old neighborhood.
There was always a calling to the deeper things, and the ministry was no different. I studied, and I asked questions....and, when they could give me no answer, I moved on. I studied Judaism, with the intent on conversion. Again I asked until there were questions "one just doesn't ask". And I stepped away from it all. Now, I am in my mid 50's and adrift from a "religious" tether...still with unanswered questions...
HAVE YOU TRIED MEDITATION?
I stumbled across the writings of Marcus Aurelius, and began posting quotes from "Meditations" on my Facebook page. A friend asked if I had tried meditation. When I asked where he suggested I start, he said that I should check out Buddhist meditation. This was in the fall of 2018. At this time, I weighed about 265 lbs. (I'm 5'9"ish) and was in pretty bad condition physically.
I quickly added Bhavadad Gita to my study (I had read of Vedante as an eighth grader), and was investigating other meditative practices when I stumbled across some information on joining a magick society. I began the initial stages of becoming an initiate, most of which was meditative practice. I was also working my way through the principles of The Kybalion, during this period.
THE BOOK THAT DID IT!
Just as I was tiring of the slow pace of the ritual magick training, and chomping at the bit to start putting what I was learning into practice, another friend (I am truly blessed with the friends that I have) sent me a copy of Phil Hines "Condensed Chaos". Wow!
Here was everything I had been pondering and studying concerning the physical nature of the universe combined with the deep knowledge I had unearthed in my meditative and magick practices. Suddenly I remembered my studies of Jung and the Archetypes during my college days, and how they fit in....All the "ingredients" began to come together.
It stands for "Everything We Do is Magick", the name of my Chaos Magick content playlist. That's the theme of my Chaos Magick Study Group I meet with every other Friday evening (you can access the online version here). Since I started my practice, I have created Sigils and Servitores; worked with Archangels, and Demons, and Norse Gods; Called Down the Moon; and I use the Tarot to meditate almost daily. Every working of Magick I undertake comes down to the beautiful synchronicity of three applications. The first is from The Kybalion: The Seven Hermetic Principles. It is the Principle of Mentalism, expressed as, "The All is Mind, the Universe is Mental". The second is an understanding of the implications of the findings in the Double Slit Experiment. The third is the attitude of the Chaos Mage who, rather than holding to any particular sect or belief, chooses instead to simply "do whatever works".
I am a Certified Reiki Instructor. Shortly after completing my studies, my brother called with some bad news. Their rescue Pit, Sweetie Pie, had been bitten by a Coral Snake and was experiencing the first symptoms of the venom. I asked my brother what he was going to do. "I guess we'll just try to make her as comfortable as possible as long as she lasts", was his sad reply. Here was the "test". I told my brother that I was going to do a distance Reiki treatment for Sweetie Pie. Thirty minutes later, my brother told me that Sweetie's symptoms had begun to reverse the minute he got off the phone with me. She went from paralysis in her hind end and panting, to a more normal breathing and a wagging tail in that brief period of time. My brother and his wife didn't question what I did or why it worked...they only celebrated that Sweetie had been "dead" and now was alive.
There's some great content from a guy who goes by "Foolish Fish" (you should check him out). He relays how, at first, he chalked up the Magick to "coincidence" quite often. He found that the events he credited to Magick occurred more often than those he considered to be "coincidence".
That is the purpose of my Introduction to Chaos Magick Study Series... to use our minds to synchronize the "coincidences" with our will. Magick is, as Aleister Crowley said, "the Science and Art of causing Change to occur in conformity with the Will". Are you ready to create your reality?
