Emerging Issues in Drug Abuse

Drug Abuse

The National Academies of Sciences, Engineering and Medicine have reported that there is a rising concern over the emergence of certain emerging issues in the drug abuse treatment field. These emerging issues include the use of marijuana for recreational purposes, increased use of prescription painkillers, the casual use of some experimental drugs and a rise in the number of people who are using heroin. All these problems come as a result of increasing social complexity and a decline in social control. Most of these issues are difficult to tackle, but it is important for professionals in Inpatient drug rehab in Nashville TN to be aware of them.

Marijuana is a favorite of many who abuse drugs. This drug has a lot of healing qualities, especially for those who suffer from chronic pain. It can provide a safe means of relaxing the mind and relieving the body of certain physical and psychological strains. There are however a few problems associated with its use. It can be extremely addictive and can cause an imbalance in the brain.

The use of marijuana also reduces inhibitions and frees individuals from being conservative. In fact, it is becoming more socially acceptable for a person to smoke pot on his/her own. It is not uncommon for marijuana users to form marijuana addiction cliques where they discuss their experiences. They also frequent parties where marijuana is used as a "social" drug. The social aspect of "getting high" is very important in the young minds of people who are under a certain impression that such drug use is harmless and will never lead to anything beyond fun.

Although marijuana is a harmless substance, it can lead to addiction if it is used over a long period of time. Users often feel a feeling of freedom and euphoria, and they may use marijuana regularly without developing addiction or withdrawal symptoms. Eventually, this causes them to seek out other substances of abuse. Heroin, cocaine and crack cocaine are some examples of harder drugs that are commonly abused. Although there are many debates over the extent of marijuana's potential to cause schizophrenia, it is well-established that these drugs cause significant damage to the central nervous system.

There are many emerging issues in drug abuse due to its easy availability and tolerance. There is no physical line as to what constitutes drug abuse or drug addiction. Many people smoke marijuana on a daily basis without being aware that they are doing so. Some may smoke it just because they feel like smoking it, while others become addicted after trying it for a short while.

Because of the ease with which marijuana and other drugs can be abused, police departments throughout the United States are focusing their attention and resources on stopping drug abusers from using them. Drug abuse can often be the result of simple supply. If you walk down the street and see people handing out marijuana bongs, the police have every right to assume that it is being used on the streets. However, depending on how popular a drug is, there are likely to be numerous variations on the hand sign. Bongs, pipes, pillows, and hashish can all serve the same purpose; getting high.

Another one of the emerging issues in drug abuse is the use of designer drugs. When someone has taken marijuana, sometimes they want to try the next big thing. By taking designer drugs, the person does not necessarily get high, but they feel a very real sense of "high." In some cases, these drugs can cause people to think themselves "high." Unfortunately, it is this type of drug abuse that can lead to problems such as depression, anxiety, bipolar disorder, or even schizophrenia.

The problem of drug abuse is a serious one. It is something that has been growing steadily over the last several years. Unfortunately, we are still faced with the issue of figuring out what is considered acceptable drug abuse, and what is not. This is a very complex issue, and it is only becoming more so as we learn more about the brain. As this emerging issue is tackled, we will learn more about those who are afflicted with drug abuse as well. Hopefully, we will come up with better ways to help them, and to keep them from hurting themselves and others.

With the US facing a significant increase in cases of prescription drug abuse and an equally substantial increase in the number of young people experimenting with illegal drugs, it is time to take a different point of view on drug addiction treatment. In light of the mounting health and economic burdens resulting from drug use, there is a pressing need for innovative approaches that can successfully address the drug problem and reduce future health problems. The Online College for Drug Abuse Scholars program at the University of Kentucky's Department of Health Services pursues a multifaceted approach to educating individuals about the drug problem, its symptoms and its effects, while equipping them with the skills to provide support to those experiencing drug dependency.
