Are You The Master or The Student?

A Lesson on Duality

By Thai CromerPublished 5 years ago 9 min read

A lot of times when we are leveling up our being, when we are striving for something more, gaining a new skill set, trying something new, we often look outside of ourselves for the thing that is going to teach us. In the last year I have lived in California, and got to a point at the top of this year where I wanted to start to make money off of the things I do naturally. So I started brainstorming the things that I do naturally; yoga every single day, social media every single day, and I was pondering ways to make online income from those things, which brought me full circle to feeling like all of the skill sets thatI have capped out at my knowledge of them or use of them in an independent way.

A lot of the other things that I have done in the past 7 to 10 years have been skill set that I have learned on my own, and gotten to a certain caliber or reputation or level of esteem in them. And now, further dropping the ego, and unfolding myself, what is being unveiled is, in order to increase my skill set or in order to unfold my being, now the things that I go after must be with others. My skill sets have capped out, and in order to level up I need community and support and be serving in a way that is pouring out to other people.

At first, when I was thinking about things that I could do, but I do naturally, I came full circle to receiving that it is time for me to become a yogi. If you interpreted this the first way I did, I thought this was amazing! That means I am moving back home, whenre my support system is, and I am going to become a yoga instructor! So I did just that. Once the auto show season was over, I moved back home to Georgia, started making connections in the community, started looking for ways to get the certification, and funny enough, the certification kept being further and further off. My initial contact with someone on the Egyptian yoga circuit, who I was looking to make contact to become a basu- that connection kept alluding me, and the same thing kept happening with Kemetic yoga. I moved back because I knew there was a certification program happening in fall in Atlanta, so I moved back, and right around the time the certification is supposed to be happening, I go online, I have my money set, and ready to pay my first installment. Then I realize the certification program had been taken offline. If you are familiar with that branch of yoga, there are not certification programs easily and readily available. There was the next one in Vegas, the next one in Chicago, and in places that were not close to Atlanta that I’d have to travel to. I had to step back and think, if I am being the lead to become a yogi, perhaps this part of the journey is not ready yet.

So I did find a studio, and for those of you who are practicing yoga, there is not a law saying you must be certified in yoga in order to teach. After 10 years of practicing yoga, I felt confident that I had enough knowledge to teach, and using my teaching skills from other realms for yoga. I thought that I had the skill set, understanding, communication skills, and patience to teach this thing that sinks so deeply into my heart. So I pursued teaching yoga one on one, and also in a studio, and also through social media.

But there was something about this method of teaching that was still not fulfilling.

And I could not figure out what it was! Perhaps because it was still a very “me” oriented skill set, even though I have been able to pour out and teach others, I was missing the mastery of it, or so I thought at the time. Even though I am able to teach, I am not necessarily in class. I’m missing the community aspect, and I am missing a teacher for myself. To remedy this, I started a free week trial at a yoga studio not to far from me. If you have never been in a new yoga class, it is amazing! There are so many infusions blending yoga and Pilates and weights these days, and I have been very traditional in my practice. All of these different infusions have been so amazing and have allowed some variety in my practice. Fully recommend taking Yoga in a group setting. To expand your individual practice.

” As I went back to analyze exactly where this called to become a yoga instructor came from, I realize I was not called to become a yoga instructor at all. I was called to become a yogi, and the definition that Yogi Ramacharaka, author of science of breath gives is Yoga closest English translation is to yolk, and to yolk, can be translated to control, and control is just mastery. Without rigid restrictions. And so really, the call that I got was to come back to my roots in order to master self, master physicality, master emotions, to become a master of mind body and soul.

This meditation you are the master, and you are the student.

The more you become centered in self, the more you used tools of introspection to ask and to find tune the purpose. You may know your purpose, so we often tend to outsource our purpose, you look for external sources to exercise that internal feeling that is the student portion of your being. Let me break that down even more to relieve transmute understanding.

The lessons come from within you. You are your own master. Your emotions are a guidance system of what you want. Your discernment, you having the power to choose, is guiding you towards what you want, your purpose is guiding you towards what you want, you are already your master. The student aspect becomes when life lessons create resistance towards what you are what you were into master says.

Let’s use the example of a relationship, your inner guidance system may be saying in order for you to have a healthy happy whole relationship, these are things you may require: you may require self-love, you may require communication, you may require constant laughter, these are just examples of what someone’s interbeing, your self mastery tells you you may require in a relationship. But you are also the student, because now it is your job, or because you are resonating this, the universe will bring you examples of how to exercise these things. So your next relationship you may actually called into being someone who takes you for granted, someone who is very serious and never laughs, or someone who is very stoic and does not communicate. Now what is happening, is your inner guidance system, yourself mastery, I was telling you what you value, and what is going to make you happiest, so the universe has brought you, the student, the test, in order to grow from there.

Back to the example of outsourcing your skill set, I thought that in order to level up with Yoga, I needed to get into classes, I need to become a yogi, I need to outsource the skill sets in order to get to this never next level of being. I need to stop being self-serving and be selfless and learn from others. And so, I had been looking for ways to level up my skill set. I realized, if I am a spiritual being then the best way to learn is from spiritual masters, so let me listen to Muji, let me listen to ROM-DOS, let me listen to Deepak Chopra, let me listen to Abraham Hicks let me listen to let me read from the Bhagavad-Gita. I was out sourcing the mastery because in my culture I have been taught you have to have a master, you have to have a mentor, so I have been out sourcing my spiritual journey to them to teach me so that there so that I could start practicing their word and that practice becomes law in me. And so, I’ve taken them on as masters, to become a student. And in listening to their practice and learning I am starting to realize, they may be a physical manifestation of what I already know inwardly. Which is why we also fine with grooves or with anybody of a spiritual nature is speaking, people are not always taking notes.

From my personal Christian background, I took a lot of notes, and, it was because I thought I was studying, I am a student, so I must write all of the stuff down. You’re being already recognizes the truth because you are already a master. When you are tuned in tapped and turned on as Abraham Hicks says, to truth, you don’t need to write down the lessons, in that moment, you listen, you absorb, and your next move is going to practice those lessons so that they are not forgotten. If you are in a jujitsu class, yes there may be from my personal Christian background, I took a lot of notes, and, it was because I thought I was studying, I am a student, so I must write all of the stuff down.

If you are in a jujitsu class, yes there may be theory to the technique, and you may have to take notes, but the teacher is teaching you something, you don’t write down OK I’m going to kick here then I’m going to punch here then I’m going to kick here. These are not things you are writing, these are things you are doing, and practicing. It is the same thing with your own mastery. When you are listening to these masters you’re being already understands because you’re being already knows. It is universal consciousness. We are all already masters, the only difference between the master and the student is that once you have this knowledge of mastery, you must been practice it for it to become law in you.

This is the key. You are already a master. In order to manifest and maintain you being a master, you must practice it as the student.

The last practical example of how this can resonate in your life. Once a week I was participating in a group gathering where, like the gathering in the book the Zahir by Paulo Coelho we talked about the lack of love in the world. We talk about happiness, what is love, what is masculinity, what is femininity, and we learn from one another from different perspectives in order to have understanding but also to reach the truth of what these things are. The last time that I went we always introduce ourselves, we say while we’re here, and how can we help, or how can we be supported in the time. The last time I went I literally just went to support. Just to be a warm Body there, to show my support of the movement, and to show my support of people coming together to heal through past traumas of love. But, I was thinking the next time why would I go? I realize, I am at a place where I would like to give, I have a lot to give. And from a spiritual nature from an experiential nature, from my past, from the concept and believes that I hold now, I would love to share them with others, because through sharing with others I also learned. Of course, if you are going to give and pour out, you will also receive. Even you speaking, becoming the master and sharing a skill set of knowledge, you are also being the student by receiving what you have to say with your own ears. By receiving the attention of others to what you have to say. If someone is paying you their attention that is the greatest form of currency anyone can give to another human being. And so I was thinking, the next time I would go, I wanted to give, to share, which is power of the number two, magnetism and receptivity. By these people allowing me to share, that is already magnetism, I am holding their attention in a vibration of mastery just for a moment while I am speaking, but, I am also receiving their attention and love and patience.

Yin and yang, balance, harmony, that is already in you.

You are the master, and you are already the student.
