8 Self-Care Strategies for Surviving a Pandemic

Self-care is a top priority now more than ever

By Evie SmithPublished 4 years ago 3 min read

Self-care is a top priority now more than ever. Even though we are all affected by the pandemic, self-care is still a solo job. This article will give you some self-care tips to improve your mental and physical well-being. Self-care must be integrated into your daily life in order to be effective. Self-care is similar to exercise. If you don't plan on running a marathon, it's not worth setting that goal. If you want to keep going with something, it is essential that you find something you enjoy.

Yoga is a great choice if you prefer yoga. Kayaking is a great option if you are interested in it. Self-care is the same. You should only focus on the things that make you feel full and forget about the rest. It shouldn't be a job. Transform an "I have" into an "I can." Take a look at these self-care tips and see how you feel. It's possible to feel lightheaded just by thinking about the idea. If you feel tired just thinking about it, then put it aside.

The Self Care Menu

Consider the following self-care options as a selection. You can choose from many options. Be aware of the reasons you shy away from certain options. If you have the ability, find out what makes you feel alive or depleted when you are exposed to different options. You can discover the "why" behind your reactions by unpacking them. This is similar to healthy eating. It is possible to want to eat healthy but avoid vegetables. You can create a plan by understanding why you don't like vegetables. They may be too difficult to prepare. You may find quick solutions such as buying frozen vegetables that need steaming. You will be able to make positive decisions based on the information you gather.

Read. Look for books that interest you. A good book can enhance your life, whether you are reading fiction or nonfiction. Audiobooks can be listened to instead of reading through different apps.

Listen to your favorite music. Find music which lifts your spirits. You can explore different genres, even those you've never heard of. Listen as you cook, go to the grocery store, and while you're exercising.

Make connections with others. Even though there are restrictions, it is possible to make deep connections even when you are locked down. Give your full attention to a loved one by calling them or using Zoom. Turn on soft music, dim the lights, and light a candle. Focusing is one of the biggest challenges we face today. Relaxing and allowing the other person to focus on you will improve your relationships. Actively being together, while physically distancing yourself and following protocols is another way to foster connection. You can walk in a park, go on a hike in a nearby preserve or snowshoe in an open space. The options are endless once winter is over.

Be inward. Taking time for yourself is an essential part of self-care. Write down your thoughts, goals and prayers. A new level of freedom can be achieved by digging deep and processing your emotions and thoughts.

Get involved. The world is changing, but there are still opportunities to be part of something larger than yourself. You can find out more about your local church, community centre, or YMCA. You can make a difference and light a fire of joy.

Eat healthy. Take control of your health and nourish yourself. Reframe healthy eating as fuelling your body if you are an athlete. Make simple, healthy meals that will make you feel great, no matter what you do.

Be creative. Remember what you enjoyed as a child. What brought you joy as a child? For the pure joy of it, reengage in creative expression. You might consider dancing, writing or creating elaborate meals. Do what you enjoy and let go of any thoughts about what you should be doing. Relaxation can be found by giving your mind a break.

Mindfulness. Take ten minutes to relax before you go to bed. Relax in a comfortable position. Close your eyes and concentrate on your breath. Although thoughts will come up, just allow them to go and focus on the life-giving air that is coming into your body. You can use this time to take a break from being distracted and write down any thoughts. This is what I call the "mind dump." It will help you to get rid of distractions that keep you awake at night.

It can be overwhelming to look at the world around you. But if you take care of yourself, it will allow for you to find joy and give back.
