Why are Men so loyal to their Football clubs?
Arsenal as a case study
Football is a beautiful game, addictive and emotion striking. one may argue it stands at the same level at which some people hold reality tv shows or maybe higher. considering it reaches almost all parts of the world. the influence is crazy. I grew up wanting to become a footballer after seeing my dad rave about his favorite footballer Nwankwo Kanu, a tall lanky forward with great strides, sublime finisher, i had to love him too and the club he plays for, a few years later and my favorite player left the club to another club, due to his age and soon after, retired. leaving me with Arsenal.
Many years later, my idols have retired and i am left with this club that i love so much. A toxic relationship but my loyalty has not wavered, i remember the night in 2006, champions league final against Barcelona, we had gone through a lot of challenges, beaten big teams to my amazement, including the colossal Real Madrid at their home, with my favorite player, Thierry Henry scoring the winner in front of their fans, at their own ground. we faced their bitter rivals in the final, at the end of the first half, i went to take my bath, basking in the euphoria of finally watching my favorite club win a trophy before my very eyes. I was bathing with soap in my eyes when minutes later, i heard loud shouting , 'gooooaaaaallll' barcelona had equalized. The game had come to life, their fans found their voice again. I rushed the bathing water, I must not miss this action, on my way to the room, i heard another shout 'gooooaaaallll' my heart skipped a beat, did we show them we can respond, what? how? why? which? when? so many questions as i rushed to the room to see my darling Arsenal losing 2-1 with my goalkeeper, Jens Lehman sent off, i felt tears coming from my eyes. it was painful, years after and my club has not won a major trophy in a while which begs the question... Why are Arsenal fans so loyal? if you think about it, they have not won a real trophy in ages, why?
If we showed this kind of loyalty to a woman, in our current society, one would be termed a fool because most women tend to take advantage of people but mehn
The loyalty of Arsenal fans can be attributed to several factors, despite the club's recent trophy drought. Here are a few reasons why Arsenal fans tend to remain loyal:
1. History and Tradition: Arsenal has a rich history and tradition that spans over a century. The club has had successful periods in the past, winning numerous trophies, including league titles and FA Cups. This historical success has created a strong fan base and a sense of loyalty among supporters.
2. Club Identity and Values: Arsenal is known for its distinct style of play, often associated with attacking and attractive football. The club has a reputation for promoting young players through its academy and has a philosophy that emphasizes skillful and creative football. Fans are drawn to this style and the values associated with the club.
3. Long-Term Managerial Stability: For many years, Arsenal was managed by Arsène Wenger, who led the club from 1996 to 2018. Wenger's long tenure brought stability and consistent top-four finishes during his early years. This stability created a sense of unity and trust between the manager and the fans, fostering loyalty even during trophy-less seasons. I grew up thinking he was the owner of the club because of the name, it was like a match made in heaven. the end of his career did not bring too many fond memories though.
4. Emotional Connection: Football fandom is often fueled by emotions and a deep connection to the club. Fans form attachments to their favorite players, the club's history, and the community of supporters. This emotional connection can outweigh the lack of recent trophies, as fans remain loyal through thick and thin.
5. Optimism and Hope: Football fans, including Arsenal supporters, often maintain a sense of optimism and hope for future success. They believe that their team will eventually overcome challenges and return to winning ways. This hope keeps the fan base loyal and passionate. There is a saying i read that says, 'it is the hope that kills you'
It's important to note that loyalty varies among fans, and different individuals may have their own unique reasons for supporting a club.
Anyways, this is it. I am Manny and i am an Arsenal fan, here is to hoping that they put bigger smiles on my face this season.
