‘This is the way home,’ I said, turning left.
I don’t know why, I just wanted to go that way, for some reason, so I said it was the way. We were heading home from the bar, my BFF and I slowly making our way back after a girl’s night out. I said I knew the way back on foot, we could collect the car tomorrow, we were both tanked and couldn’t afford an Uber. I proudly said I knew the way home, I didn’t, and I said it with such confidence she believed me … even though we only moved into the area last week. As we rounded a corner, I bumped into another girl.
‘Oh, sorry-’ I started, but couldn’t finish speaking … I became lost in her eyes.
Her eyes ... They were a bright emerald green with a sparkle that seemed like gold flecks. Her hair was bright copper and shined even in the dim street light … but I kept getting lost in her eyes … I couldn’t look away. It was like from that instant a part of my soul was trapped in them.
‘No worries,’ she said back to me, smiling. ‘What’s a cute thing like you doing out so late?’
Her tone was playful and yet … there was something more to it I couldn’t place, a genuine desire to know? I blushed a bright red that matched her hair. She took my hand in hers, gave me a wink, let go, and then walked away into the night, as if a sprite or creature of the night.
I looked at my BFF, who had a massive cheesy grin on her face, I just know she’s about to start making "kissy" noises at me. I looked to my hand, in it was a card with a number, I looked back to my BFF, smiling, before casting my eyes over my shoulder towards the girl fading into the night.
‘You know what … I really do think this was the way home after all …’
