Nothing In This World
A story of two men who fell in love with each other

As the sun set over the city, Malik sat on the edge of his bed staring at his phone. He had been staring at it for hours, scrolling through social media, trying to find the courage to do what he knew he needed to do. He had been hiding his true self for too long, and it was time to come out.
Malik was a young black man who had always known he was gay, but he had grown up in a conservative community where being gay was seen as taboo. He had always been afraid of what people would say if they found out, so he had kept it hidden from everyone, even his closest friends and family.
But things had started to change for Malik. He had met someone, a man named Marcus, who had shown him what it was like to be loved for who he truly was. They had been seeing each other for a few months now, and Malik knew that he couldn't keep hiding forever.
He took a deep breath and typed out a message to his best friend, Jasmine. "Hey, can we talk?" he sent, waiting anxiously for her response.
A few minutes later, Jasmine called him back. "Hey, what's up?" she asked.
Malik took another deep breath. "Jasmine, I need to tell you something," he said, his voice shaking.
"What is it?" she asked, concern in her voice.
"I'm gay," Malik said, the words tumbling out of his mouth before he could stop them.
There was a moment of silence on the other end of the line, and Malik's heart started to race. He had been so afraid of this moment, afraid of what Jasmine would say.
But then he heard her voice, gentle and kind. "Malik, I love you no matter what," she said. "And I'm so proud of you for having the courage to tell me. You're still the same person you've always been, and nothing can ever change that."
Malik felt a weight lift off his shoulders as he heard those words. He had been so afraid of losing his friends and family, but now he knew that at least one person would stand by him.
Over the next few weeks, Malik started to come out to more people, one by one. He told his family, who were surprised at first but ultimately accepting. He even told his boss, who was supportive and offered to connect him with a local LGBTQ+ community center.
And through it all, Marcus was there by his side, holding his hand and offering him unwavering support. They had always talked about how they wanted to be able to hold hands in public, to show the world their love, and now Malik was slowly moving towards that goal.
But it wasn't always easy. There were still moments of fear and doubt, moments when Malik wondered if he had made a mistake in coming out. He still heard whispers and snickers from people on the street, and he knew that there were those who would never accept him for who he was.
But he also knew that he couldn't go back to hiding. He couldn't go back to pretending to be someone he wasn't. And with Marcus by his side, he felt strong enough to face whatever came his way.
One evening, Malik and Marcus were walking through the park, holding hands and enjoying the warm summer breeze. As they turned a corner, they saw a group of teenagers sitting on a bench, eyeing them suspiciously.
Malik's heart started to race, and he felt Marcus squeeze his hand reassuringly. They kept walking, trying to ignore the stares, but then one of the teenagers called out to them.
"Hey, you two! What the hell are you doing?"
Malik stopped in his tracks, his heart pounding in his chest. He felt Marcus step in front of him, protective and strong.
"We're just walking," Marcus said, his voice calm but firm.
The teenager sneered. "Yeah, but you're holding hands. That's disgusting."
Malik felt a surge of anger rise up in him. He had put up with enough hatred and bigotry in his life, and he wasn't going to take it anymore.
He stepped forward, his head held high. "You know what's disgusting?" he said, his voice shaking with emotion. "Hate. Ignorance. Fear. You can keep your small-mindedness and your hatred. We're in love, and we're not going to hide it. So you can either accept us or get the hell out of our way."
There was a moment of silence, and Malik braced himself for the worst. But then one of the teenagers spoke up.
"You know what? You're right. We're sorry. We were just being assholes."
And just like that, the tension dissipated. The teenagers got up and walked away, and Malik and Marcus continued on their way, their heads held high.
As they walked, Marcus turned to Malik and smiled. "I'm so proud of you," he said. "You were amazing back there."
Malik smiled back, feeling a sense of pride and accomplishment wash over him. "Thanks, but I couldn't have done it without you," he said, leaning in to give Marcus a kiss.
It was a small victory, but it meant the world to them. For the first time, Malik felt like he could be himself in public, without fear of judgment or persecution. And it was all because he had found the courage to come out and be true to himself, no matter the cost.
Over time, Malik and Marcus continued to build their relationship, sharing their hopes and dreams for the future. They talked about getting married, starting a family, and building a life together. And even though they knew there would be challenges along the way, they were ready to face them together.
As Malik looked back on his journey, he realized that coming out was the best decision he had ever made. It had been scary and difficult, but it had also been liberating and empowering. He was finally able to live his life on his own terms, without the weight of society expectations holding him back.
And he knew that there were others out there, just like him, who were struggling to come out and be true to themselves. But he also knew that they didn't have to do it alone. With love, support, and an little bit of courage, they could find their way out of the darkness and into the light.
The end.
