Learning To Be You
For The People That Need It The Most
I am proud to have a nephew who is gay, another close relative who was a lesbian, a friend who is a pansexual, and a friend who is a transgender man awaiting a sex change to become the woman he has always felt he was on the inside.
What I am not proud of is that there are so many who are judgmental and uncaring to the point where these people can not be who they truly are. One of these people is the most important person to me (aside from my kids) and I take it personally that their lifestyle is not accepted, and it took them so much time to be who they truly are.
I tried to encourage my transgender friend, but something still held him back. He finally changed his name and started dressing how he felt, like the woman she has become. It was when she was becoming the woman she wanted to be and finally felt accepted by most of the people in her life, that she learned to be herself as well as love who she was even if no one else accepted her other than the few people close to her.
Here is a playlist of songs that have taught many to love and accept themselves. No matter what they are facing it has helped them to celebrate their pride.
1. King Of Anything- Sara Bareilles- This song is about every one having their own opinions that they are entitled to, but you do not agree with or follow their values. And no one else has the right to tell you who to be.
2. Brave-Sara Bareilles- This is a great song because it is all about being you and being brave enough to be you, brave enough to show who you are, to not be afraid.
3.Fight Song- Rachael Platten- This song is all about finding the fight in you to achieve what you want in your life. It is about not being beaten down but finding the strength to find the fight within each of us.
4. Whitney Houston- I Wanna Dance With Somebody- This is great because it really gets to the heart of everybody needing somebody no matter what their sexual preface is. It reminds you that every body has the right to love.
Other songs are as follows:
Billi Ellilish- Wish You Were Gay
Lady Gaga- Born This Way
Hayley Kiyoko- Girls Like Girls
Katy Perry- I Kissed A Girl (And I Liked It)
Some songs can be thought of for anything that you face. It is not that you need to find pride in your sexuality, but in yourself, for emotional needs, to get through a challenging time in your life, to find your strength.
The worst thing that you can do is to give up on yourself and stop being you. Take pride and stay true to hear you are. Somewhere in this life are the people who will be proud of you no matter what you choose in your life, what or who you are, or what you do in life.
If you do have pride in yourself then no will else will. As parents, we need to have pride in our kids, whatever the case will be.
I am proud to say that I will always support my kids if they come to me one day and tell me they are gay, as I was with a close relative of mine. And like I was there for other people in my life.
Be who you are and find a good support system.
