Being a lesbian in the 1980s
by Sam Harty

Leaping Lesbians
was always
my favorite
pride month song
we'd drink beer on the patio
and everyone would sing along
-=-
Ronnie Gilbert sang about
the girl
in the red velvet dress
while we dreamed up
our perfect mate,
on the perfect date.
-=-
Being a lesbian
hasn't always been easy
especially
if you ain't got a tribe
But when you see someone new,
someone pretty and kind,
there's nothing like the vibe
you feel inside.
-=-
People might mock you
and call you a "lezbo"
but they have no idea,
how could they know?
How drowning in her eyes feels
and how she touches your soul?
-=-
So have Pride
and hold your head high!
We are LGBTQ+!!
Do or Die.
There's no halfway of doing it
don't even try.
-=-
Men may hate me
or they'll want to
cure me,
rape me.
But they don't stand a chance
I'll be the one with the girl
on my arm at the dance.
-=-
I never Lept or met a girl
in a red velvet dress
but I've had beers on a balcony,
kisses on a Turkish ferry,
so I think
being a lesbian is the BEST!

Aww, Sam you did leap! You leapt right into my heart as always with your clever, well used words. Been a minute, but I'm back trying to read, read, read and write, write, write as much as I can, can, can. (there's a dance in there somewhere, lol)
