A Glimpse Beyond the Mirror

How Queer Representation Transformed My Understanding of Love, Courage, and Empathy

By Oluwafemi Fred-AhmaduPublished about a year ago 1 min read

I once believed I knew love's face,

A simple truth, a common grace.

But then I saw a love so bright,

It shifted how I viewed the light.

Two hands entwined, against the storm,

Not bound by what we call the norm.

Their eyes held fear, yet burned so true—

A different love, yet nothing new.

In every laugh, in every tear,

I saw a courage fierce and clear.

To love, while shadows linger close,

A silent war with no repose.

Their voices spoke of wounds untold,

Of nights alone, of hearts grown cold.

Yet still, they loved in spite of pain—

I felt my own heart break, then gain.

For what is love, if not a fight,

To claim your truth, to seek your right?

To hold another, soul to soul,

And in that bond, become more whole.

It wasn't pity that I found,

But empathy, deep and profound.

For love, I saw, takes many forms,

Each beautiful, though weathered storms.

And now I know, through eyes anew,

That love is love, both bold and true.

In queer hearts' strength, I came to see,

A deeper sense of what love can be.
