A Deeper Understanding

Learning Appreciation

By George HallPublished about a year ago 2 min read

Growing up in high school in the early 2000's i didn't have much of an understanding of the LGBTQI+ community, as a whole. It wasn't until i went to university, almost a decade later, that i began to meet people from this community and learn to appreciate them for who they were. I even became good friends and romantically attracted to a girl who was bisexual and even attempted to ask her out at one point, but nothing came of it.

She was going through a lot of stuff personally at the time and ended up reconnecting with an old friend and flame from her past life. They ended up becoming a couple and later down the track even invited me to their wedding, which i attended. Feeling very honoured to be invited, even after years of our studies being over. At the time, i was a Christian, but due to my kind-hearted nature and never really considering myself a full blown Christian, in regards to my beliefs . Never had a go or inquired about her beliefs, as some Christians might.

Getting to know her, really changed my attitude to this community and realised that they were just like anyone else, regardless of their sexual orientation. This was one of the main factors that eventually drew me to leave the church as a whole, as i didn't like how the community treated the LGBTQI+ community and were only really nice to them for the sake of being nice, when they secretly despised who they were.

I also went though a bit of a phase in high school were i considered transitioning into a girl. So had some addition empathy for the kind of trials, a lot of them would have to go though. But since finishing my studies and leaving the church, i've gained a lot more appreciation for the community and when it came time to vote yes or no to gay marriage, in my country. I was completely on board with saying yes, as i'm sure many people from my generation were, outside the religious types. Which no doubt led to the very fact my friend and her partner where able to get married and i feel very proud, as a result for been a part of that change.
