Please be careful with online medications – my true story from tonight

I only ever sleep four hours at most. I’ve got arthritis in my legs and the pain keeps me up. I always feel worse when I try to lie down, maybe because I go into panic mode. I’m mostly okay in the day, but nighttime’s hard.

So I’d been reading about magnesium tablets that are supposed to help with joint pain and sleep. I thought, why not? I ordered a pack online for £9.99. To my surprise, they arrived tonight at 8.15pm, delivered by Amazon — even though it had said it would take two days.

The label said to take one or two tablets. I only took one.

By about 8.30, just before 9, I went up for a shower. Suddenly I went all shaky. My stomach tightened up. I felt ill. I couldn’t even dry myself properly after the shower. I threw my nightdress on and called out to my husband: “I feel really ill.”

He sat with me on the bed and said, “It can’t be the tablet that fast.” But I knew in myself it was. He stayed calm, tried to distract me, and looked up reviews on Facebook and Trustpilot. All good reviews. A few people mentioned some odd symptoms, but nothing too alarming.

I’d already written a message on the company’s Facebook page asking if anyone could advise me. Then I noticed something strange — my message disappeared. It had been taken down. That unsettled me even more.

My husband stayed with me. He thinks I had a panic attack, and maybe he’s right. I don’t usually take tablets unless I absolutely have to, and he said I’ve been more anxious about health things since I had COVID. He made a brew, sat with me, and I started to feel a little better — though I was still full of trapped wind and felt shaky. I told him to go back downstairs, and I’d rest.

Later I rang my grandson and told him what had happened. He said, “Nan, I think you panicked too — you do get scared easily now with your health.” And he’s right. But I still say I felt physically ill. I still don’t feel 100%, though I’m better than I was at 9pm.

I’ve contacted the company and told them exactly what happened. I asked for my money back. It also seemed very strange that they were delivered on the same day, when it clearly said two days. That made me wonder — is it a scam? Could they be tampered with, or even something worse inside?

Maybe that thought is what triggered my panic. I don’t know. But I know I was not well.

PS: I only take paracetamol at bedtime, so nothing else could have interacted with the magnesium. That’s why I’m questioning all these so-called “safe” recommendations I see online — especially on Facebook. Are they really safe?

I kept thinking: What if I have a heart attack? What if I die? And of course, those thoughts made me worse.

Now, after two cups of tea, I’m like a yo-yo — up and down to the loo every five minutes! I can’t win, can I?

Please, everyone — just be careful what you buy online. I’ve taught myself a real lesson tonight.

Stay safe,

Marie xx

Buying meds online can be sketchy. You were smart to question it. I once had a bad reaction to a supplement I ordered. Lesson learned!

Great advice. Never know who packed them and if they made a mistake
