Nectar Collector Guide

The World of Nectar Collectors

What is a Nectar Collector?

Simply put, it's a “percolating dab straw.” Like a standard dab rig, Nectar Collectors are designed to vaporize hash and concentrates. They are portable and use a dish to help avoid some of the mess of tooling your dab when on the go.

In essence, a nectar collector is a mini dab rig. The term “rig” (drawing on a pun with oil) is slang for the device you'll be using to consume the dab.

Parts of a Nectar Collector

  • Silicon or glass straw: used as a mouthpiece to inhale vapor
  • Titanium or quartz tip: similar to a dab nail, this is heated and then used to vaporize dabs
  • Silicon or glass dish: a receptacle for dabs
  • Water chamber: similar to a bong, nectar collector bubblers offer water percolation for a smoother dab

How does a Nectar Collector Work?

Dab straws are made of 3 parts: neck, body, and tip. Most of the time, all three parts are detachable and can be switched out with other parts - another factor that attracts glass heads. The neck and body can be made of either glass or silicone, but the tips, similar to a dab nail, can be either titanium, ceramic, or quartz depending on your preference. The pieces connect via their joint and can be assisted with the addition of a keck clip or joint wax.

Honey straws can be used with or without water, but careful not to add water with the tip attached. Water in the tip when heated has the potential to crack the piece. Once you’re ready, with or without water, finish putting the device together and get your concentrate ready. You’ll need to place it in a high temperature tolerant wax dish or on a silicone dab mat.

Now you can carefully heat the tip of your Nectar Collector - it doesn't need to be red hot. Some don’t like the lack of temperature control that comes with using a dab straw, but you can still do the wrist test and take a safe, lower-temp dab with these devices.

Once heated, simply dip the tip of the straw into the wax and inhale — A great feature of this design is that no material is wasted when using a Nectar Collector. You simply remove the tip from your concentrate when you are done inhaling, saving that precious wax that would have melted away in a normal banger style nail.

Are Nectar Collectors Safe?

Dabbing etiquette should be used when you're dabbing. You always want to be careful of your surroundings when dabbing as torches and hot materials can be dangerous if caution is not exercised. If your nectar collector or dab rig is made of silicone material, try to keep the heat away from it.

Pros

  • Novelty designs—water doesn’t spill when set down
  • Ease of use
  • Portable
  • Requires minimal equipment—no tools besides a butane torch
  • Easy to clean because it can be taken apart

Cons

  • Less temperature control
  • Not same quality hit as a dab rig

Is a Nectar Collector Worth it?

If you're new to trying concentrates, a nectar collector can be a great way to familiarize yourself with dabbing and avoid some of the complexity of operating a dab rig. Or, if you already have a dab rig at home, nectar collectors can be a great portable tool to help you enjoy your dabs on the go.

Do Dabs Smell?

Yes. Dabs smell. You're heating highly potent cannabis extract, inhaling it, and then exhaling it back out into the room. However, the smell will not be as strong as if you were to light up a joint or use a pipe to smoke flower indoors.

Why Does my Nectar collector Taste Burnt?

Yeah you're getting it too hot. You want to be able to put your hand an inch or so away from the nail without the heat stinging you too bad, let your oil pool on the nail, then carb cap it (use your thumb if you don't have a dome less).

How to Heat a Dab Rig Without a Torch

To use a nectar collector, place your extract on the dab dish. Next, heat the tip of the collector with a blowtorch; once it’s hot, tap it against your concentrate and draw in the vapor via the mouthpiece.

  1. Turn on the stove and set heat to high.
  2. Hold the nail with the tongs and place it over the burner.
  3. Heat the nail for up to 5 minutes.
  4. Take it out and place it in your rig.
  5. Dab as usual.

Cleaning a Nectar Collector

Cleaning any smoking accessory is very important. Whether you have a pipe, a rig, a vape pen, or anything else used to consume cannabis, you need to maintain and clean it. Luckily, the nectar collector is one of the easiest accessories to clean because it comes apart. Simply, open up all the components of your honey straw and follow the detailed cleaning instructions here. Any remaining residue on the tip can typically be burned off with the torch.

How to Collect Reclaim Out of a Rig

  • Remove your nail and fill the rig's chamber half-way with either ISO alcohol or grain alcohol.
  • Plug the mouthpiece and joint of the rig with your fingers, paper towels, or something similar.
  • Pour the alcohol-reclaim solution into a glass cooking dish.
