Your Last Smile That I Didn’t See

For I thought that you were happy

Your demise has left me numb

Your passing away took my strength astray

This news brought me to the pews

And I can only stare at the cross

While dreadfully feeling your loss

You left leaving us with unanswered questions

Your leaving left me in a poignant condition

Did we contribute to your decision?

Should I have reached out to you more?

Did we lack in understanding of your situation?

Should I have visited you more?

Were there more tears unshed?

Were there more actions undone?

Were there more words unuttered?

Were there more questions unanswered?

Were there more coffee dates unscheduled?

Was there more behind that teary smile?

I thought we talked about it

I thought we cried all of it

I thought we decided to be hopeful

So we could smile in full

But these thoughts that are supposed to be treasured memory

Are slowly turning into words for your eulogy

Though I’m filled with questions

I blow a kiss in your direction

As I can’t hug you anymore

Still, your love lingers in my core

And I don’t need to understand

Your actions to make sense

It might be another query

Added to my life’s mystery

As I continue to open my eyes

Embracing this world with all of the whys

In your world where troubles cease

May you rest in peace.

‘Till we meet again on that beautiful shore.
