You Deserve

So don’t you forget it

Please listen to these words and take them to heart,

Because you deserve better, you deserve to be heard, deserve to be seen and you deserve validation,

You deserve someone who will turn up for you, hear you out with compassion and understanding,

You deserve the emotional intelligence you give out, to be returned to you in kind.

******

You’re allowed to make a fuss, to make a big deal out of the things that cause you hurt,

You’re allowed to feel deeply, to talk about the anger you hold inside,

To raise the issues that caused you to melt down,

To express the wrongs done to you, to feel the pain these wrongs caused.

******

You’re allowed to raise it over and over again until a resolution is found,

You’re allowed to cry and heal, to have a shoulder that’ll support your weary head,

Your feelings deserve to be seen, to be expressed in their raw entirety,

And no matter how big or small they may seem, you deserve to be supported.

******

You don’t need permission, because your emotional journey is valid,

It’s a part of who you are, what you have experienced and the baseline of your compassion,

And sadly, you’re not made for just anyone, you deserve that special someone that can catch you when you break,

Not someone that’ll break you and watch you fall.

******

But what you deserve and what you get, can be too entirely different things,

If you are constantly told, “Get over it, work it out, leave it alone, just stop,”

Run, run for the hills because that’s coming from a place of unintelligent emotions,

That’s coming from a lack of empathy, lack of accountability, and a destructive soul.

******

Instead, you deserve to be loved, supported and cherished,

Hold out for the person that sees the beauty in your brokenness,

Who’ll stand the test of time, stay even when the road travelled gets bumpy,

The one who’ll never let go of your hand.

About the Creator

Colleen Millsteed

My first love is poetry — it’s like a desperate need to write, to free up space in my mind, to escape the constant noise in my head. Most of the time the poems write themselves — I’m just the conduit holding the metaphorical pen.

Thank you for this much needed reminder. We deserve to loved and supported even in our most difficult times. We're only human after all.

This is such a warm, heart-centered reminder! You totally deserve to be heard, supported, and loved—through all the highs and lows. Everyone needs someone who gets it, stands by you, and helps you feel whole. Keep holding out for that kind of love!

Colleen, this missive speaks to the rational selfishness that is often maligned in our culture. Yes, an individual should stand up and “make a fuss” and much more. Continue expressing this idea of egoistic ambition. I shared! Merry Christmas…. S.S.
