You Aren't Alone

As typical as it can be, even I had a crush on a straight boy!

You Aren't Alone

Are you tired, you aren’t glad

Your unhappy face makes me sad

What’s the sorrow in your face

Did you lose your living faith

You aren’t glad, you are sad

Or are you tired – it’s so bad

You aren’t in the group of your friends

You are far away in a different land

Have your sorrow a deeper ground

Or is it the Spanish sound

You aren’t alone, you’ve one friend

Tell me your sorrow, I understand

.

Do you miss your own home

Is your heart filled with a stone

I don’t know why it makes me sad

With your unhappy face I can’t be glad

You’ve to keep the faith and tell

What’s the matter of your heart hell

I wanna be your friend for every time

All your pain is also mine

Could I see –in your face – a tear

Or is your way only a fear

You aren’t alone, you’ve one friend

Tell me your sorrow, I understand

.

When we traveled with the train

In your face I could see a pain

It’s too bad, too bad and makes me sad

Only your smiling face makes me glad

Your smiling face shows me the sun

And gives me back my losing fun

Come to me to tell me your sorrow

And I will help you to change the tomorrow

Let the devil out and the heaven in

With a smiling face you’ve to begin

You aren’t alone, you’ve one friend

Tell me your sorrow, I understand

November 1995, during a student exchange in Barcelona, I noticed my classmate, the one I had a crush on looking unusually sad. That evening, I couldn’t shake the feeling, so I wrote the lyrics to You Aren’t Alone, pouring my heart into the hope that he would feel cared for, even if he did not know why. The next day, my crush caught me finishing the lyrics and asked to read them. I hesitated, but eventually, I handed them over. Watching him read was nerve-wracking, but when he looked up with a smile and said he loved it, I felt like I was walking on air. He even showed the lyrics to some of our classmates, and they loved it too.
