Yellowhead Flats

By Anita Dotts

By Anita DottsPublished about 7 hours ago 1 min read
Illustrated by Dyllan Wattie

An untried route

for a convoy of two

Volkswagen van and Willy’s jeep.

Short straws rode second,

outside of towns, the highway

ran long, straight between endless Spruce.

Leaves already burning orange and red

before September premature.

No glimpses of the Rockies expected

home by dark promised

Without repeats of history

Without thoughts of spares used up.

One flat happenchance, two luckless.

Waiting on the roadside past dark

the short straw duo left by the Willy

While little sister smiled and waved.
