"Yellow"

A poem about finding my "yellow"

By Marissa LearPublished 5 years ago 1 min read

Ever since I was little, I’ve hated the colour “yellow”

To me it was a disgrace

The reason why people made fun of my face

A direct correlation to my race

I thought that the rainbow had no place for “yellow”

Conquered by the bright oranges and greens

Everything and everyone else shines so bright, it doesn’t get seen

It was just an excuse for others to be mean

I was an outsider because of the word “yellow”

My skin is not like the others, it has a different tint

My culture is not like theirs so I took the hits

Always being undermined, constantly needing to sprint

I despised “yellow”

To me it wasn’t nice

Bringing along slurs as cold as ice

People making fun because I ate rice

Nothing about “yellow” felt right.

But I’ve realized it is more than a colour

It’s the feeling of embrace, holding one another

It’s the perpetual positivity that fills this world with wonder

It’s the warm sun shining off a baby, smiling at their mother

“Yellow” can be anything

It’s the buzz of a bee bringing in spring

It’s a happiness so rich, I need to sing

It’s the goldenness of a bell and the ever-pleasant ding

I’m reclaiming “yellow”

No longer does it represent all the insults

A divide between me and my classmates because of their impulse

Now it is the reason I exult

Because I realized that “yellow” is my happy

A thing which makes me different is one I should celebrate

Diversity is a gift which allows us to accelerate

Hate and discrimination is what we need to penetrate

The sun is yellow

A lemon is yellow

Honey is yellow

A lion is yellow

I don’t hate it anymore.

A bee is yellow

A crown is yellow

My skin is yellow

My happy is yellow

I found my “yellow”
