Winter Walk

Winter irritates and pleases me in equal measure

I wrapped up warm for a winter walk.

Too wrapped: too warm.

I am irritated by Winter's erratic moods,

Flitting from frost to claustrophobic clouds

In the wings of Night's theatre.

Winter is a divo

Intent on mercurial mood.

But does he provide

A sublime performance?

Yes. When he sings for the heavens!

The beauty of brightness on days like today

Where sky is clear and blue is sharp

Makes me happy in the flush of cheek and coolness;

The scarcity of foliage highlights

Where he strikes and leaves the lightning of white

As his signature.

Today, it is the crispness I savour,

Knowing that tomorrow will squelch and

Wet with wind rainyness

If that's what Winter decides.

And I will once again dress badly

At the mercy of his moods.

This was so good and different from most takes on winter. Loved the way you expressed your frustration along with the beauty of winter.

Winter is the best season, and I dare someone to tell me it's not. This captured its beautiful essence, and I physically felt too warm when wrapped up, lol

  • I just don't know how you guys survive winter. I would straight up freeze and die, lol. Your poem was so beautiful!

    Artful anthropomorphism abounds!

  • Trying to figure out what to wear always seems to be a challenge, especially if you're going to be in & out. I've taken to dressing in layers. Winter can be lots of fun--but not if you're miserable!

I love the line Flitting from frost to claustrophobic clouds. I love how you coax feeling and atmosphere In both your prose and your poetry. Another lovely and lively poem!
