Winter’s transition

Speckled shades of fallen leaves

Crisp and clear the trees sigh

Crunching snow and ice beneath my toes

I hear the earth settle in for hibernations

The light gleams cold and white,

The scent of snow soft upon my nostrils

Awakens memory of long brittle nights

Fallen russet, yellow and red leaves slash underfoot.

Trees unclothing for spartan sleep

Warm fires raging on the hearth

The birds are hiding in their hollows, wisely guarding their nests with warmth

The wind blows through my hair,

Carrying the reminders of other autumnal

Slipstreams.

Beauty in the shedding of leaves,

Peace in the comfort of snow.

Lightness of being in the cool of the night.

Reservoirs of light scarify the stoic shift to winter.

Warm heart, warm mind.

Sublime.
