Winter's Gathering

Family Tradition

By Dan R FowlerPublished 3 years ago 1 min read

The Gathering

Once more the world pauses, hearts gather near,

From around the corner or across oceans surreal,

Many travel from the most distant locations,

To be with friends and family no matter their vocations.

Through treacherous weather, snow, wind, or rain,

I remember those who gathered together and why they came.

In the distance beyond the door, almost out of sight,

I watched and I waited for them both day and night.

It wasn’t for the tinsel, ribbons, boxes, or bows,

But for the closeness, we shared a meeting of souls.

They parked their cars and trucks outside curbside.

Getting out of the weather and then safely inside.

Melting ice and snow on the doormats and floors,

Didn’t a discussion create or cause an uproar.

Puddles were plenty inside the cold doors,

When loved ones entered coats, caps, and snow adorned.

Spices for cooking and candles for scent,

Greeted those entering with hugs they represent.

For to give of oneself is the greatest gift,

Home, heart, and soul as pure as a white snowdrift.

After meeting and surrendering to the day’s setting,

All sit sharing memories of past gift-giving.

Memories of those nearest to our hearts,

Of those who’ve passed on to heavenly parts.

Each word spoken delivered to all,

The meaning of traveling, cooking, and snowfall.

The gathering together is what matters,

Not what’s prepared and served on large platters.

In my mind, I relive this celebration each year,

The times of our gatherings I still envision are so clear.

It is for this reason I continue with tinsel, spices, and cake,

To honor those who gave me their love of which to partake.

No matter the weather, whether snowy or frigid cold,

I’ll forever cling to my thought as I get old.

Brothers, mother, father, aunts, and cousins to recall,

Gave their best gifts as we gathered one and all.
