Winter’s First Breath

Frozen tranquility

By Ryan BurkeyPublished about a year ago 1 min read

A placid December morning dawns

Darkness blankets the hinterland

The forest lays still, hushed and calm

As creatures sleep snug in cozy shelters and dens

Leaves are traced in alabaster lace

The sun’s first rays reach out over the mountains

While the moon exits the sky’s stage

Icy creek waters flow in frigid fountains

Blossoms cling to their final days

Bare skies let a cold rush descend

With the warmth of toasty flames

Glow the windows of quiet cottages and cabins

Perfect stillness envelopes the countryside

No planes, trucks or cars rush by

The world is buttoned-up, sealed tight

A peaceful winter lullaby

The long, barren season has come

The first frost has arrived

Months of rest will soon pay off

When spring brings vibrant colors and new life
