Winter, Her Protector

A Poem

Though the first frost has yet to form

Winter makes his presence known

The nights stretch longer, a chill sets in

The world grows quiet and dim

A cold sting forms beneath my feet

As I dance along the ground,

Once warm and soft with the summer heat,

Now freezes over without a sound

Then a bitter breeze brushes my skin

As darkness drapes over me

I’m suddenly taken aback

By this swift change I see

I put my hands to the dirt

And my heart starts to sink

For the Earth’s warm demeanor

Has begun to wane

But to my surprise, she is not pained

In fact, she welcomes his cold embrace

And slowly she begins to fade

Into a soft, peaceful sleep

And now I finally see…

Winter comes not to punish or cause pain

He preserves and protects her

As she rests and regains her strength

And as I observe their cool embrace

My worry falls away

For this season of slumber is nothing to fear

No, it’s a welcome release

Now he assumes his post

She fades into sleep

And my eyes grow heavy as

His gentle chill also embraces me
