The route was tainted
Turned poisonous and stagnant
A sign beckoning travelers
To turn away-
Find a way around-
Despite the welcoming entrance
The wide open space,
The seemingly level ground-
Picture perfect pollution-
Swallowing the mind
And filling ears with screams
Of the lost and fallen,
A wrong step
A wrong look
And the evergreens swallow
Circling in-
Vultures on the hunt-
Intent to bring ruin-
Did you read the sign
Turn back
Turn away
Detour that way-
An arrow pointing along
A rutted road
Lined with boulders and briars
Stretching towards sky,
A wall meant to keep out-
Appearance of a fence
A trigger point-
Eyes double back
Turn back
Turn away
Questioning minds wander-
Afraid of a wall believed to hold in
Not to protect from preying monsters-
A deep breath
As curiosity emerges
And feet make their own way
Working through wilderness-
A freedom desired
Not direction
Despite the mass’s desire
To follow the same line
Presented by those before.

An invitation to adventure, to seek, explore & discover. Ahh, I pity the mind that can see a sign that says, "Do not Enter," & not wonder what lies beyond. (Unless, of course, it's an interstate highway. That always makes me think "Planes, Trains & Automobiles".) Thoroughly enticing, poking & prodding our curiousity.
This is amazing. A metaphor for so many things. Well done!
