It all got heavy
when I agreed to change

I contorted myself
unrecognizable
smile masking pain
remind me why I stayed?

Life drained of color
all blurred together
weeks turned into months
months into years

I wasted too many tears
to be in arms that choked me
that held me so tight
I’d forgotten what it was like
to be free
