Why Does This Need to Be Reality?

screw you, societal norms

Why do I need to learn how to drive?

I've been there, done that,

had my fair share of almost accidents.

Sure, practice makes perfect ...

But why would you want someone behind the wheel

who doesn't feel comfortable driving

and who doesn't have the focus to remain safe?

*

Why do I need a university degree?

I have two -- whoop-dee-doo! -- that I've never used.

I spent numerous dollars and numerous hours

on glorified pieces of paper,

when we live in a world that turns YouTubers into musicians.

But why is a higher educational institute

deemed the only acceptable path towards a career?

*

Why do I need to birth a child?

I mean, sure, I'd love to be a mom --

in fact, I've dreamt about taking in foster teens.

But why is adoption or fostering considered "not real"?

And why would you want someone,

who can barely look after herself,

to be in charge of keeping an infant alive?

*

I believe in living my ideal reality,

the reality CREATED by me, for me.

I believe that society can take its norms

and shove them where the sun don't shine.

I believe that we are here, in this bodies, for one life --

so why not enjoy it, and live on our terms?
