Who Will Love My Dog When I Am Gone

He is like a son I never had

Who Will Love My Dog When I Am Gone

When I am gone, who will stroke his fur,

Whisper soft words into the curve of his ears,

Who will sit by the fire and watch him dream,

Toss him a treat, laugh at the way he stumbles?

He will wait by the door, eyes searching for me,

Tail still wagging, heart loyal beyond reason,

Who will call his name, pat his head,

Hold him close when the night feels too long?

He is mine in ways the world cannot claim,

A friend unspoken, a presence I leave behind,

I hope someone sees him as I have,

Knows the depth of love in every soft breath.

I think of the walks we shared, the quiet mornings,

The way he nuzzled close when the world was cold,

Who will keep him company if the rooms are empty,

Who will laugh at the way he tilts his head?

He does not understand absence, only presence,

And I wonder if he will wait for me forever,

Or if another hand can hold him like mine,

Soft enough, patient enough, to earn his trust.

The thought of leaving him behind weighs heavy,

A shadow that follows me through each day,

I wish I could take him, or stay, or find a heart,

As full and kind as mine, to love him when I am gone.

Even when I am gone, he will remember,

The scent of my coat, the sound of my voice,

But the world is large and I cannot stay,

So I hope for someone who will love him like I do.

They are your best friends who do not judge or hold grudges; they just want to be near you. There are no times my two little girls have kept me from doing something stupid because I ask myself, who will look after them if I am not here?
