This poem I am about to share with you, WHO AM I? WHO AM I? is a kaleidoscopic view of my ‘life’ after encountering several life traumatic challenges, including domestic abuse, kidney and brain cancerous tumours, and the tragic loss of my second son. Rather than labelling myself as a victim, I began to study the power of our mind, and embarked on a miraculous therapeutic self-healing journey that transformed much more than my health.
Sometimes it feels impossible to separate who we are from what we do. We hide amongst the shadows of roles and familiar comforts; and allow others to label us. We criticized and undervalue ourselves and try to be someone else to be accepted and liked. For the pass few I have been looking inwards, discovering the inner beauty of myself and multiple choices we have to respond to whatever life throws at us. And I am now eagerly ready and able to answer that question:
WHO AM I? WHO AM I?
While I laid in my mother’s wound
I was unaware of the colour
of my skin, gender, race and culture.
When I came out into the light
I was identified as Black Female Human Being
born in the Caribbean.
WHO AM I? WHO AM I?
As a Child...
I was brainwashed by external influences
and expectations, exposed to racism, abused,
confused, criticized, judged, misused by family, peers,
society education, religion, politics and news.
WHO AM I? WHO AM I?
As an Adolescent...
I acquired a defensive attitude
I was adventurous, anxious, curious, furious,
mischievous, rebellious, made mistakes
and struggled to free myself
to find my identity.
WHO AM I? WHO AM I?
As a Young Adult...
I was a lover, wife, maid and mother
Enslaved to be controlled by the force of others
Addictive and submissive by learnt beliefs and habits
Sabotaged by fear, infused with dependency and insecurity.
WHO AM I? WHO AM I?
In my Mature Adulthood...
I have chosen to unlearned to relearn
I AM no longer a slave to others or my past
I AM not what I do, I AM not what I have,
I AM not what others labelled me as
WHO AM I? WHO AM I?
In this present moment
I AM awakening to reality
I choose not to be identified by the colour
of my skin, gender, race or culture.
WHO AM I? WHO AM I?
I, I AM the creator of my life
Powerful and unstoppable by nature
Enrooted in my own authority.
WHO AM I? WHO AM I?
I, I AM what I seek
I AM Love , I AM Peace
I, I AM a spiritual soul
Fulfilling my role in this world.
WHO AM I? WHO AM I?
I AM Light…!!
