White Cross

on the Side of the Road

By Julie O'Hara - Author, Poet and Spiritual WarriorPublished 3 years ago Updated 3 years ago 2 min read

There’s a fresh white cross on the side of the road on Hwy 31 in New Hampshire

Crisply painted, white, and with beautiful silk flowers decorating it

There is a name and date painted on it that I cannot see from my car window

It’s a beautiful scenic mountain road that winds and curves

Around forests and streams

Where wildlife and human families flourish, live and breathe

It is also where seemingly uncontrollable

Deadly lawlessness, recklessness and anger have set up residence

Where joy is found in the unholy terror and pleasure found in

Bullying ruled from the driver’s side seat

Of pickup trucks and SUVs.

Except for the person displaying and experiencing them

Where tailgating, horn honking and middle finger throwing

Are used to exert self-assigned dominance

Denied these perpetrators due to their own personal failings and ineptitude in life

Speed limits and double yellow lines are mere parameters

To be ignored and mocked at by the entitled pathetic few to incite

Terror and fear in innocent members of the community

Where the police seem to be at a loss at protecting the innocent

They can’t be everywhere after all, and there is not enough funding to

Counteract this deadly aggression

In a society that seems to be unable to govern and protect itself

Where self-righteous frustration turns into raging fury that only

Serves to harden the hearts, souls and penises of those afflicted.

No one is impressed with these shows of aggression

No one. No one. No one. No one. No one.

Except for the person displaying and experiencing them

Where being kind and having a conscience is something to be mocked and ridiculed

By these cretins who are never held accountable or shown consequences until

There’s a fresh white cross on the side of the road on Hwy 31

Crisply painted, white, and with beautiful silk flowers decorating it

There is a name and date painted on it that I cannot see from my car window

Such a place of beauty, such a place of death
