Where Will I Find Myself Today

The choices are limitless

I wake up to the sight of blue skies with fluffy white clouds

And spend some time wondering what to do with my day,

Plenty of chores to do, maybe spend the day with friends

I could roll over, go back to sleep, no I need the sun rays.

***

I’m still undecided as I climb quickly out of my comfy bed

Maybe I’ll mix it up a little, have a shower, wash the floor,

Even put a load of washing in the machine, feed the cats

Enjoy a leisurely cup of coffee before I walk out the door.

***

Then a light bulb moment, it’s the perfect day for a hike

I could wander the wilderness for hours, see the sights,

As I meander along the way through the virgin rainforest

Keeping my footsteps quiet, not scare the birds into flight.

***

There’s a river to my left, the rainforest stops at the banks

A quick dip in the flowing waters, cooling down my hot skin,

And an hour or so sunbathing on the quiet bank in the sun

Before I wander further into the forest, to a clearing within.

***

I begin to hear the loud noises ahead, of fast rushing water

How delightful, as I hike closer, to see these waterfalls here,

The roar of the flow is loud as thousands of gallon’s overflow

Giving me the notion of how powerful Mother Nature is clear.

***

The river and its flow can be terribly misleading, seems safe

As it slowly meanders along its path, silently but so deadly,

Dragging you to this point, the extremity of it’s mighty power

Crushing you against the rocks as it flounces its loud medley.

***

Hours have past on this hike, time flies faster than you’d like

The washing needs to be hung up and the rubbish to dispose,

I take a final look around, the greenery imprinted on my mind

I continue for a minute before I regrettably let my book close.

About the Creator

Colleen Millsteed

My first love is poetry — it’s like a desperate need to write, to free up space in my mind, to escape the constant noise in my head. Most of the time the poems write themselves — I’m just the conduit holding the metaphorical pen.

I always like surprise endings. This one, .... before I let my book close, made me feel better. I am not up to a real hike and was feeling kind of sad about some of the changes brought on by advancing years. But this kind of hike I can do. Just open the book again! I hearted.
