Where Shadows Glow

Flickers of memory and flame

By Alan J. EdmondsPublished 3 months ago 1 min read
Bonfire night in the garden, November 2016. Photo by Alan J. Edmonds

Oil lamp flickering with its welcome heat,

Shadows safely banished by amber light.

Hammer treacle toffee, tempting to eat,

Bracing to face the chill of autumn night.

His kind, gentle hand protects me from harm,

Hissing fireworks spark a glittering rain.

Delighted by colours, booms that alarm,

Fading too fast, but memories remain.

* * *

Joy once treasured now meets a fateful end,

Racing for life through smoke and shadowed streets.

Arriving too late for Dad, my dear friend,

Haunted by memories, my heart still beats.

* * *

Though sorrow lingers, hope begins to rise,

As children step where I once watched the skies.
