Where Be Our Cincinnatus?

a poem

By Matthew J. FrommPublished 2 years ago 1 min read
Cincinnatus Leaves the Plough to Dictate Laws to Rome By Juan Antonio de Ribera

Where be our Cincinnatus?

That golden hero of yore

Where be our Cincinnatus?

To whom even Washington swore

Above reproach

Pridefully evoked

A common admiration

Wielding power with veneration

With the Aquei’s threat abated

Upon the Field of Mars, abdicated

Laying down stewardship's yoke

Knowing it be no golden cloak

Where be our Cincinnatus?

Someone upon whom we can depend

Where be our Cincinnatus

Amongst these common men?

Remembered this from when you published it originally. Another clever and stirring piece from you! Making my decision hard, dude! Thanks!

Interesting! Makes me wonder if Cincinnati was inspired from his heroism. If so, they need to rename that city pronto, lol. I've been to Cincinnati and its mostly trashed. Decent football team though. Love where your mind goes with what you chose to write.

I am not familiar with Cincinnatus but this just sounds like an old relic found in the back of a university or an old temple. Really well written - love your historical writing!

Cincinnatus left the plow, won a major battle, and gave up his power to go back to his farm. There is not a soul out there willing to do that now. Sad. :(
