When I’m Older

learning from our parents

By Anna ScoutenPublished 5 years ago 1 min read

in my sleep,

I watch you stay,

all your new lives

Start that way.

In my sleep,

You never go.

We never find out,

We never know.

But when I’m older, I’ll teach my kids,

How to love, within limits.

Give up fast, you taught me that.

It doesn’t last, you taught me that.

Give up fast, you taught me that.

It doesn’t last, you taught me that.

In my sleep, you never go,

And all these faults and cracks, we never know.

In my sleep, I watch you stay,

And you miss me while I’m away.

But when I’m older, I’ll teach my son

How to shut out, everyone.

And when I’m older, I’ll teach my girl,

It’s a shame, to be one in this world.

Give up fast, you taught me that.

It doesn’t last, you taught me that.

Give up fast, you taught me that.

It doesn’t last, you taught me that.
